So it's been like 2 years since I've had my 80 and I never noticed the battery had not tie down until now...

I was looking and I don't see any holes where J hooks would go to hold down the battery. Am I blind and missing something? How should the battery be held down on a stock FJ80?

Thanks,
TJ

Yes, u are blind; no , just kidding. There is a angle that fits the front (front of cruiser) of the battery and two j-bolts; one to the right fastening to the battery box and one to the left fastening to the left front fender.

Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for.

Did you source that from toyota or did you just make some brackets from the local hardware store?

Boy...I was doing a pre-trip inspection on my 94, and tightened the battery hold down. Noted the midships hold down seemed a little mushy...looked and the bloody j hook was in the composition battery box. The driver's side j hook went into a hole in the fender.
Hope I'm not the only one that thinks that hook in the composition battery box is a little hinky.
Pulled the battery. There is a bolt through the battery box that sits just under the battery, toward the rear. Scoped out the topography of the battery box. Pulled some 1.5" strap out of the possibles pile, made some measurements, plied the 2 pound sledge to good effect, and ended up with a contoured strap which is held down by the bolt under the battery, and emerges on the midships side. I bent the midships side up at 90 degrees, drilled a hole for the j hook, and bought an extended j hook at 0'Reilly. Cleaned and painted the bracket while I was at it.
Typically make it a practice to keep the vehicle wheels between my kiester and the center of the planet, but if I end up otherwise, I now have some confidence that my battery will stay where I last left it.

If you go to an optima I used a ruff stuff battery mount and I cut the factory battery tray down and bolted the ruff stuff mount to the factory tray. It’s worked really well! Doesn’t move one bit!
