If you want the auto instead of the manual I would suggest posting an offer to trade, I believe the manual is often more popular, so you might get a straight up swap for someone interested.

Honestly, your plan (which is cool) is going to end up as an awful daily driver and there is no way the capital put into it is going to offset fuel costs to run your current truck. Have you given any thought to finding a 1FZ equipped truck and swapping your aftermarket parts over and getting a camry or whatever to drive around town?

The ND's (non directionals are a radial) and I suspect the rubber may be a little harder.

I wish I could help more on the drivetrain... but I can't help but interject on the DD/cummins/portal idea. Diesels are VERY tall motors, and your front axle/oilpan clearance will be an issue unless you run a lot of lift (yes even with a custom oil pan). Portals will compound that problem. Be sure you pencil it all out first- tires to axle to oil pan or crank, up to the valve cover, clearance for the hood, etc. You don't want to throw in a 3 inch body lift at the end to make things fit or have to run a 8 foot tall rig.

I would love to have diesel power in my unimog 404 axled 4runner, but I went with a turbo gas powerplant to satisfy my forced induction addiction without as much restriction on layout and weight penalty.

When I read this it sounds like I am trying to tell you not to do it. I am not! I love the idea, I just want to help you plan for "low" before it is too late

Roguefab hit a good point.

My 80 has the oil pan notched to clear the front axle pinion. You will want a bit more height/clearance, though mine can pretty much drop down low enough (with the airbags) that the wheels will touch the arches with 37's. So you will need some extra height, portals will add about 6" or so, and you'd need about a minimum of 2-3" of lift for the axle to clear the bottom end. Although, My motor probably could have gone a little tighter to the hood, changing the intake routing or the shape of the hood could give you some clearance.


Another thing, I would like to upgrade the front axle at some point. If you get rid of the high pinion front for a low pinion (dana 60 or something) and move the axle forward an inch or two you may gain a bit of clearance as well.
