Same topic different thread. To crumple or not to cumple? I have a background in engineering and a pretty good understanding of basic physics. However it seems like the answer as to whether the heavy duty bumper really protects or harms occupants during an accident really depends on the accident. (and which vehicle you are in )There are so many variables - angle of impact, size and weight of other vehicle, speed of each vehicle, etc. etc.. Hitting a solid fixed object head on with a non- (low) deforming ARB probably would be harder on the occupants. In other instances the non-deforming angled nature of the ARB might deflect another vehicle so that the energy of the impact is not allowed to travel directly through the cruiser. The stats do tend to support a larger and heavier vehicle being the safest. What about the situation where ARB vehicle is stopped or barely moving and someone else runs into it? Deceleration of ARB occupants is not much of a factor so what affects acceleration in the opposite direction? deformation yes, but mass is a major factor (it is half of the inertia equation). Without getting into kinetic energy vs inertia and other stuff the bigger and heavier vehicle usually wins.
So the only way we will be able to definitively answer this question is to get someone to donate two cruisers(maybe we could use *eeps) one with ARB, one without, and some test dummies (any takers?) Head on at 25-30mph each should be sufficient. Actually this probably would be valuable information.
As for whether the ARB would pose a greater risk to the other vehicle - I dont think that needs much discussion - it is a legitimate concern.
Oh yeah one other interesting point - I remember reading that the 80 series had a six point ladder frame and that the 100 series went to a eight point ladder for more rigidity. I am guessing this was for ride quality though.??
