Why would you put a tire on that would rub at all, unless you are going to upgrade your springs in the near future. If you're gonna do your springs you might as use the $$ you were gonna spend on the tires and put it towards a lift.....then buy tires.
I was about to do the SOA when I put them on. My friend at a tire shop sold me the 5 used 35's mounted and balanced for $200. I had to jump on the deal before they were gone. I was just gonna park it, but they fit so nice I had to take it out a few times.

That might have a lot to do with tire tread pattern, and not as much to do with tire size.
My stock size tires were Dueller ATs. It's a decent AT. And I don't think tread pattern is going to effect how big a rock my axles will clear.

31's vs 35's is only 2 inches more clearance. Two inches generally isn't the determining factor between making it and not, but you're right about the dueller's they are a pretty decent tire.

I'm amazed you still have any fender to tire clearance at all, they actually don't look like they take up more wheel well space than my 33's.

35X12.50 on stock rims so you round the side of the tread pretty good creating more clearance from the fender. Do you have a picture of the tire stuffed in the wheel well from the side?

I have Big-O 33x9.5 they are a more agressive tread than the BFG's and still quiet onroad I have had this thing in some pretty tough situations offroad and never noticed any rubbing. they are AWESOME!

Your kidding right? 2" under the axle is huge. Have you seen all the work that goes into shaving axles to get 3/4"?

Agreed. If you are doing a lot of highway miles I would prolly go with 31s (>50 miles a day). If not, go with 33s.

I don't get this--33s on the highway will lower your rpms ("rubber overdrive"), which is very nice. I'd almost say it the other way around (31's offroad, 33s on) in terms of wheel speed == torque. But the extra inch of clearance with the 33s is nice.

I may be getting old and practical, I say go with 31’s. That FJ62 has a huge overdrive, nearly 30%. I would say 33’s or larger should have 4.88 R&Ps to work properly. With 4.11’s 3rd and 4th gear are not close ratios and highway travel will likely put you in a spot between these two. In 3rd the rpms will be quite high since there is quite a bit of slippage in the torque converter and in 4th the rpms may be too low to maintain speed on inclines and there can be difficulty in achieving lockup of the torque converter. In short I think the auto with the stock 4.11’s and 33” or larger tires puts a lot of extra heat into a tranny with heat problems to begin with.

Flowman, Benji has it right. A FJ62 is great to drive around town with 33’s but sucks on the highway IMO. The Overdrive is too big with the extra rubber overdrive. The Problem with the FJ62 is that it was the first Cruiser in the US to have perfect gearing for the highway with stock tires.

I'm waffling between the two sizes...the 32's are only a couple of bucks more if they can be sqeezed on the narrow rim.

I normally drive 75-80 on the highway so RPM's at that speed are 2700-3000, so some longer gears would be welcome, but sometimes I wish I could manually control the lockup.

It depends on how fast you drive. Yes, at 50-55mph (indicated) going uphill can be annoying because you are right there at the 3rd-4th shift point and the converter keeps unlocking. Once you're over 65mph, though, 33's are wonderful. 2500 rpm is 78mph. If I was getting street tires for a stock FJ62 I'd get 33x9.5's.

So do 32 x 11.50 fit OK on the stock chrome wheels?

Ordering tires today...

Yup.

You can have a full size spare under the rig with 31's. Don't know if any larger would work.
Local tire guy recommended an 8" rim with 31" tire or bigger, so stock rims with 32's is stretching it!

33x10.5

I ran some 33X10.5 on FJ62. Rubbed a little off road. It really dogs in the hills, and I looked really wierd. Now with a 3inch lift, they look and perform sweet. Still slow in the hills.

My winter tires are 33X9.5 BFG MT Stock wheels stock springs stock gearing. Bilstien shocks. It's really hilly around town here, The truck is a dog off the line or starting up some of these 9% grades. It also handles really top heavy with the high side wall of the 33. Off road it does fine, no rubbing ,snow; no problem.

Handles way better with the summer tires (whimpy) 235x75/15s Duelers. No body lean, climbs better but no rubber o/d.

33s look way better.
