Today I tackled the throttle position sensor on my '89 FJ62. I removed it from the throttle body to clean and inspect it, then searched here on MUD for a thread I remember seeing recently. Here it is:
TPS adjustment
I had to replace the TPS on the throttle body to perform the checks in the FSM. I wasn't sure how exactly to adjust it until I got to Post #6. Easy to figure out from the excellent write-up from @lechnito - thanks! I had trouble getting any reading on the multi-tester so I removed the TPS and had my wife rotate the mechanism while I held the probes against the terminals. I did get the tester to go to infinity after a small rotation, so I reinstalled it on the throttle body and tested it again, this time using an old analog multi-tester. I inserted two feelers totaling 0.043 inches (0.032 and 0.011) and rotated the TPS until the tester just pegged, then tightened it down and re-checked. No dice, so I thought I'd try an experiment. I swapped out the 0.011 feeler with a 0.012 feeler and the tester pegged, so that's an indication of how sensitive that little bugger is. Then I tried to go the other way by swapping out the 0.012 feeler with a 0.010 feeler, and nothing worked. So I removed the sensor and made a note of the orientation of the mechanism. It appeared to be hanging up, so I cleaned the internals with some electronics parts cleaner to free it up. It still doesn't work, so there must be an internal problem that's intermittent. I got tired of fooling around with it so started an Internet search for a new replacement. Even with a healthy discount, a new OEM part would cost ~$100 with tax and/or shipping, so I went to the online parts catalog and looked for analogues. There are quite a few aftermarket replacements, so I looked for the best combination of lowest price and fastest shipping. Turns out the best deal is through Amazon for this sensor:
eCatalog
Grand total with tax and shipping is a little less than $77, and I'll have it Friday. All positive reviews, including one from an owner of an '88 FJ62. Not bad at all.
