Today I tackled the throttle position sensor on my '89 FJ62. I removed it from the throttle body to clean and inspect it, then searched here on MUD for a thread I remember seeing recently. Here it is:

TPS adjustment

I had to replace the TPS on the throttle body to perform the checks in the FSM. I wasn't sure how exactly to adjust it until I got to Post #6. Easy to figure out from the excellent write-up from @lechnito - thanks! I had trouble getting any reading on the multi-tester so I removed the TPS and had my wife rotate the mechanism while I held the probes against the terminals. I did get the tester to go to infinity after a small rotation, so I reinstalled it on the throttle body and tested it again, this time using an old analog multi-tester. I inserted two feelers totaling 0.043 inches (0.032 and 0.011) and rotated the TPS until the tester just pegged, then tightened it down and re-checked. No dice, so I thought I'd try an experiment. I swapped out the 0.011 feeler with a 0.012 feeler and the tester pegged, so that's an indication of how sensitive that little bugger is. Then I tried to go the other way by swapping out the 0.012 feeler with a 0.010 feeler, and nothing worked. So I removed the sensor and made a note of the orientation of the mechanism. It appeared to be hanging up, so I cleaned the internals with some electronics parts cleaner to free it up. It still doesn't work, so there must be an internal problem that's intermittent. I got tired of fooling around with it so started an Internet search for a new replacement. Even with a healthy discount, a new OEM part would cost ~$100 with tax and/or shipping, so I went to the online parts catalog and looked for analogues. There are quite a few aftermarket replacements, so I looked for the best combination of lowest price and fastest shipping. Turns out the best deal is through Amazon for this sensor:

eCatalog

Grand total with tax and shipping is a little less than $77, and I'll have it Friday. All positive reviews, including one from an owner of an '88 FJ62. Not bad at all.

Pardon my ignorance, good find by the way, but is this a plug and play item? It looks as though no calibration would be necessary using this part.

The only "calibration" is setting the orientation (by rotation) of the TPS on the throttle body housing. When set, you tighten down the two screws.

Glad my post was helpful @4Cruisers!

I haven't dissected my old TPS, but I'm pretty sure it's what would be called a rotary potentiometer. The basic idea is there are internally 3 terminals: input, output, and the resistor. As the throttle is opened, the throttle body rotates a spring loaded mechanism within the TPS that causes a wiper to move across the resistor. The voltage that flows through the output terminal is limited to the extent that the wiper is in contact with the resistor.

Ultimately, it's a clever way to convert mechanical rotary position into an electrically detectable signal, but it requires a clean contact between the wiper and resistor and precise calibration of the default rotational position of the potentiometer.

BTW, the probes that came with my multimeter were useless for this job and I had to solder some small alligator clips onto them.

That's very educational. Is it just me, or does it look like a bunch of material has been worn off from the end of left most wiper in your 3rd photo?

UPDATE:

Got the replacement TPS yesterday, pretty quick and a day earlier than I thought. Just ordered it Tuesday night. I installed it on the throttle body this morning and ran the FSM checks. Works great. As noted in @lechnito's post, the infinity point on the resistance was easy to find by rotating the TPS with 0.043" of feelers installed. Was much easier to dial in by having the two screws almost tight, so the TPS could barely be rotated until the analog multi-tester needle jumped. It stayed put until I could get the screwdriver to tighten the screws up.

Please correct me if im wrong but my FSM calls for .93mm gauge to be used (.036"). Wondering where your .043" came from...im trying to tackle my Throttle Position Sensor issues right now..maybe my manual is wrong and thats part of my issue.. or maybe it makes no difference it just sounds like this little bugger is fussy about its exact location/rotation. Howd you make out in the end? My idle is stuck up around 1000/900rpm and i have tracked it to the TPS so far..
