Over the past few weeks, on three occasions my truck has acted like it was running out of gas. It would always recover and continue to run. Finally this week it did not recover. I can get it to start after a few tries, but it stumbles and dies.

This is what I have checked:
1. Fuel Pump Running
When I turn on the key, I cannot here the fuel pump. When I jump the bypass circuit I can hear the pump running.

2. Checked EFI Relay per manual
Everything checks out

3. Checked Circuit Open (under passenger side kick panel)
Everything checks out

4. Replaced Fuel Filter

5. All Fuses Good

6.Computer Codes
Received Error 28 - Related to Oxygen Sensor
I have aftermarket duel catalytic converter I have been running for 2 years.

What I did not check:
1. Fuel Pressure Regulator
Did not have gauge

Question:
Should the pump come on when I turn the key to the on position?

Am I looking in the right direction or should I be looking at another part of the engine system? Timing? Ignition?

I have had my pumps run but not put out enough pressure for runnning. Also sock on pump in tank gets stopped up.If the pump has over 150,000 miles on pump and sock... Id replace. MIke

Same thing happened to me. My problem was the circuit behind the passenger side panel. It was full of water and rusted out. Ended up installing the new one upside down so it doesn't form a cup and the water runs off if it ever leaks in again. Could be the fuel pressure regulator on yours but definitely look into the fuel pump.

Fuel pump should only come on in the crank position or in the on position if the engine is running (with the AFM telling it that the gate is open), or if you jump it.

I took everyone's advice and replaced the fuel pump and sock. With 295,000 miles on the truck, I figured it was due. Problem fixed.

Looking over the forum I went for the cut out in the bed of the truck. I was too afraid to using a cutting wheel and make sparks, so I used cutting shears instead. An hour later and a soar grip, it is possible to cut out. The next step was to pull the old unit out. I took the bracket off under the truck that holds the fuel lines in place, because you do have to slightly bend the lines in a nice rounded curve with your hand as you pull the unit out. Once out, I discovered the ground wire holding on by a thread and the sock looking pretty dirty. The ground wire eventually broke off, which is soldered to the fuel pump bracket. Luckily the bracket has a hole in it (which I think was made for this very purpose) and I was able to create a new ground wire and bolt it to the bracket.

Once all of this was done, the new unit goes back in pretty quick. After a few tries with the ignition, the truck started right up. My friend will now be making a new cover plate, as the cuts with the snips do not leave the the piece I cut out looking that clean.

Shout out to my friend James for all his help over the past two days. And thanks to everyone who answered above. Having a truck that runs feels so much better than one that doesn't.

Hey Anthony, Glad to hear that you and James got it figured out. Let me know if you need any help with the patch.

I'm having a similar issue with my 1989. I replaced the distributor because the ignitors were getting fried & cost too much to replace. I replaced the fuel pump because of the it wasn't working... Now it's as thoung main injectors aren't opening... I'm stumped...
