Ive been chasing noise in my FJ62 speedometer. Replaced the cable, lubed where the cable enters the speedo but the fluttering noise still existed. I disassembled, cleaned and eventually realized that the noise was coming from the speed cup (magnet) which isn’t serviceable as far as I know. (I put a drill bit covered with painters tape in the back and ran it in reverse to diagnose where the noise was coming. The instructions on disassembly are shown after the photos below)
I decided to swap the speedo for a better unit and balanced the mileage up just to keep things honest.
Most of the time a disassemble and clean should be enough to quiet your rig so I’ve attached photos of how to do it.
1. Remove 4 screws on the back side of the unit
2. Remove 3 screws holding the clear plastic cover off the speedometer
3. Unscrew the trip meter plunger
4. Remove clear plastic cover along with the black metal surround and gasket
5. Use fingertips to squeeze speedometer needle up until it pops off
6. Remove 2 screws holding speedometer face to the speedometer unit
7. Spread entire inside with electrical contact cleaner
8. Use thin bicycle lube or alternate to lubricate worm gears inside
9. Reassemble.
IF YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THe UNIT AND BALANCE UP TO CORRECT MILEAGE....
1. Remove the small aluminum tube located to the right of the gear and below the 1/10th mile odometer reading
2. Push the rod holding the odometer wheel to the left about an 1/8th on an inch. This will free up the left hand side of the rod to be lifted up and out of the speedometer unit.
3. You can find instructions on how to adjust mileage elsewhere, in my case I just spun mine until I reached the right mileage (donor unit was 180k and my rig has 227k)
Like I said, most of the time a clean and lube will solve your issue, in my case I had to source an alternate unit and balance up the mileage.
