about 4 days ago my transmission started to make a weird squealing sound then yesterday morning it took about 5 seconds to go into reverse then the tranny started to slip real bad. i checked the fluid and it was black....:bang: coukld a flush fix this or is it something more serious? -thanks

From your brief description I am going to guess that your output shaft is worn. Mine is a little worn and it clanks when going from park to reverse. Yours sounds to be worse. You have a few options.

You can replace the output shaft with a McNamara shaft which is a Australian after market shaft.
You can replace it with a stock output shaft (most people here won't recommend this option.)
You can pony up and upgrade to a manual H55 trany if that's your cup of tea, I prefer auto.

And my favorite, replace the whole trany with someone else's FJ62 on this board. There are a few in the mud classifieds in different states. If you are in Ca I have a spare for you which would be cheaper than the McNamara shaft which runs ~$400+

Check these mud classifieds if you go w/ the trany replacement route or pm me if near L.A.:

I am not 100% sure it is your output shaft. We're gonna need more experienced people to chime in.

Try pulling the pan, cleaning the filter, flush and new fluid. Mike

Time to play 'Taps'

Hard to say if your tranny is toast or not, but it doesn't sound good. Do a search on "passive flush" and follow those instructions carefully. Be sure to inspect the bottom of your pan for any kind of debris. You can use cheap ATF, since you really just want to find out if your tranny is done for. If the flush cures your problem, then drive it around for a week and then flush it again, this time with quality synthetic ATF. No need to pull and clean the pan the second time around.

I second the notion of a passive flush before anything else. You might get lucky and buy a bit of time. Start planning for it's replacement.

The McNamara business is actually the input gear. The ouput shaft wears and causes slop in the splines where the input gear rides. The McNamara gear has a longer area of spline engagement. If you are at the point of slipping, something else is wrong, unless the splines are completely stripped, and there is no engagement with the input gear at all.

With the burnt fluid, you know where to start looking for your problem, and planning for a new transmission. I agree with the idea of buying a low mile used one. I have seen them as cheap as $50, though if you need one, I'm sure it will be more.

Plan for a trany cooler install in the future as well. Good insurance after you repair this.
