FJ62 mirror disassembly?

I'm resurrecting this thread because the paint (over the OEM plastic chrome) is peeling bad and I want to strip it completely, dechrome it properly and prep it right before painting it again. I found the Burco replacement glass on Amazon listed as in stock, so I'll order that and just go ahead and shatter the glass that's in there to hopefully access the screws for the motor mechanism. If I have any luck, I'll update. If not, I'll curse a lot and hate my mirrors.
Did you ever figure out a dechroming process for the plastics? Having a hell of a time on mine
 
Gidday team. Thought I would chime in here as Ive just been working on this today and manage successfully to remove the glass without breaking any of the sockets, but I did manage to break one glass. Okay for me as I have a spare.
My question is has anyone got the aftermarket ones and tried to implant the mechanism into these yet? I am apprehensive to try yet as I have concerns the screw holes wont be in the same place...

That's my thread on moving old motors to new OEM manual mirror housings. All screw locations are identical.

Toyota did a really top notch job in applying chrome to the trim plastics, so it's next to impossible to remove easily. The only effective way I've found is, sadly, far from easy. Once it starts peeling from the plastic, you just use that as a starting point to beginpeeling it off bit by bit from the assembly. Once you have it stripped, you can give it a good cleaning, and then paint with some SEM prep, color, and protectant. I have yet to use any SEM products on anything that will be exposed to the elements though, so I can't speak to how well it will hold up there. I can say the plastics I've done that are inside the cab look outstanding.

Been doing basically the same. The part thats already peeling comes off super easy, the part thats adhered is nearly impossible. I tried a bleach soak, and got another 30% off, but the lingering ~20% of chrome is a pain. And I dont want to do all this work, paint it, and then the rest bubbles later down the line. Might have to sandblast the rest

I considered sandblasting, but my worry was putting too much heat to the plastic and creating warped spots, or having grit get into the motor & arm assembly and causing problems. I haven't yet tried some sort of blade to scrape away at the chrome, but next time I try to dechrome any plastic I'll give that a try. I'm not worried about scratching the plastic, since most can be sanded away to the point where they won't show through primer and paint.

Off topic but this is scrubbing with red scotchbrite pads and a day of soaking in bleach

I plan to Cerakote them, but it’s taking a while to clean up. I figure the mirrors and grill will be the same pain
 
im dechroming all of my pieces, mirrors, fender vents, front headlight bezels to dip in a kevlar finish....
im going to be using muratic acid to eat the chrome away and loosen it up. the big central grill is going to be the hardest part as its large
ill post pics of how this goes
