My '89 FJ62 has this annoying habit. At the gas station, when the tank fills up and kicks off the pump handle lever, I get a big slosh of fuel that runs down the side of the truck and onto the ground. It does not matter which gas station I'm at, it does it at all of them.

Does your 62 or 60 do this?

What causes this?

Any remedies?

I don't have this problem with my Fj60. However I'm in California, and I our gas nozzles are probably different and shut the fuel off sooner. If you take off the right rear quater trim panel, you will reveal the fill neck as well as some vent tubing, and EVAP stuff. Make sure none of the hoses are kinked, collasped, cracked, etc.

I get it once in a while.

california has the vapor catcher thingies... itd be hard for gas to splash out

but in other states it happens to me every once in a while too. doesnt really bug me...

Interesting, doesn't happen to me in Ca as above.

Supposedly there is a specific angle for the fill neck that the later filler nozzles are designed to operate with. One aftermarket fuel tank mfg calls it the "Beta Angle", not sure if this is unique to them or an industry-wide name. Given that our 60's probably pre-date this standard there may not be simple cure.

My 60 does it every fill-up. It is extremely frustrating. My solution is to set the rate of fill on the slowest notch, and it still does it. I end up washing it down with the windshield wand. Awaiting an appropriate response also. -M.

maybe just do some math based on the guage and stop it when it gets close to full? or when it gets close to full do it by hand paying attention to noises? i say that cause mine usually makes a gurgling noise right before it splashes out and i can catch it in time if im paying attention.

Right NG, it's just a matter of listening and stopping the pump manually. Not a big deal and worth paying attention to when you fill up.

On my 62, I do the the full force fill up till a couple of gallons from the end, then switch to manual and listen for the gurgle, stopping short of full.

The big problem (besides the impact on the environment) is that the spill over eats through the clearcoat. I have just repainted and clearcoated as a result (partially) of this.

So, the solution is . . . manually fill and stop at the gurgle.

LOL! :lol::lol:

My '62 gets lousy fuel mileage, has a front heater that is driving me insane, is underpowered, has uncomfortable seats, leaks oil, wanders all over the road, and rides like a boxcar. On top of all that, I have to listen for the gurgle!

Why do I like this truck so much?

I must be nuts!

:D

Ha!
If you think you hate it now....what'll you drive it :hillbilly:

My 60 does the same thing. I don't have the fix..but now I just normally just hold the handle and fill it up "manually" and try to hear when its getting close to full, so I can turn off the flow of gas. Yeah it pissess me off. I thought it might be something wrong with the fuel tank vent or something but looks like its common to the design, given the number of replies.

Somewhere in here I remember seeing something about a recall for this issue. My 62 has the gas stain of doom down the rear quarter pannel. I have the opposite problem however in that I have to hold the nozzle handle UP in order to not have the system kick the thing off every half gallon. CA, sometimes its better, then there are the taxes..

That stain drives me nuts! It's the only thing wrong with the passenger side of my truck minus the micro rust spot:eek:

This has never happened to my truck. I even stick the gas tank cap in the dispenser handle to keep it from stopping when i let it go!

I'm in NY btw.

Happens to me to. I almost always use the slowest fill rate. if I do use the faster fill rate then I do what others have said and listen for the gurgle. I found that different stations are worse offenders than others. If I am at a station that I don't usually use then I definitely listen for the gurgle and watch it. I never top off.
