I have a'88 FJ62 and need to ditch my a440f for a manual set up either the 4 or 5 spd. I was wondering if anyone has done this and what I need to look for. Does the speed sensor need to be reinstalled for the ECM or is there a way around it like getting one from Downey and adapting it? Help its supposed to be my wifes new ride!
I think I read that you have to weld a new trans mount? I havent done it myself but I might if my 3fe gives me probs. I have access to a 60 manual w/2f. anyone do this yet, id like to hear.
tranny/transfer case
flywheel
Complete clutch kit
Master cylinder
Pedal assembly
crossmember mounts
driveshafts
Might be something I'm missing.
The tranny/transer are pretty much bolt on. The 3F bellhousing works fine. You will need to relocate the tranny crossmember. You can either get new stock mounts or go with a trick c/m. You will need to drill some holes for the master cylinder, and run all of the hydralic lines to the slave cyl. Swap in the entire pedal assembly. All in all not too difficult, just time consuming.
I don't remember doing anything with the speed sensor.
If you are running stock suspension/tires, you may want to swap out the 3rd member for some with the 3.70 ratio.
I have 240k on one and 340k on another both never been apart.
David Dearborn did the H55 into a 3fe swap and LOVES it. Think with a new trany and all the stuff he had 4k into it, but its done right.

sanjuancruiser, how many miles did your A440 last you? Thanks for info., just anticipating the average lifespan of my A440 With 205k.

This sounds like good news . I have about 310k on the A440 but I don't think it was taken care of. The bushings in the oil pump are out and not available as a separate item nor could I find the correct rebuilt torque converter. This is the first one I have ever heard of that has grenaded.
The hardware swap seems straight foreward though Thanks for the heads up on the crossmember -doesn't sound like a big deal since I have a 60 doner.
Thanks for the advice I'll post how it comes out.
I have an HJ61 with the auto and I recently installed a rebuilt extreme valve body and new torque converter from http://www.automatictransmission.com.au/release.asp?NewsId=11360 and I have been wheeling it hard for the last two months. I am aslo running an extra cooler and transynd fluid. I have to say I am very impressed. Even the guys running the standards had renewed hope for the auto.
and I am not small, I am running 9.00R16 michelin XLs and wieghed in at 3140 kgs
It didn't miss a beat. Just letting you know the auto can be made to work and run hard.
The auto is one of the toughest out there. here in the states though the parts are extremely expensive. If it was a good core I'd probably build it up. timbercruiser, where do I find Toyota Trails?
Thanks. The swap would be the same with regards to the engine management system-I think. I'll see if I can round up the TT article. landpimp does Dearborn have a post on his swap or an E-mail?
Well its finally done. the swap is complete.
'81 60 series bell housing floor pan and clutch sys. incl. pedal assy.
H55f w dual fric. c-force clutch w/2f fly wheel
custom crossmember w/factory trans mount
shortened/lenthened drive shafts
removed elec. sw for 4 hi
installed harness for reverse + 4wd lights
jumper wired NS sw
WOW! What a difference. This thing has so much more power than w/the auto. The drivability is way better. How's 4th gear on 6% grade @ 7000ft @ 55mph sound?
I recommend this swap to anyone who has remotely even considered it!
SO all I need to get the H55F onto the FJ-62 (3F-E) are the parts off of a FJ-60? I know the crossmember is different but to attach tranny to my motor and to my T-case the parts come off of a FJ-60? I was under the impression it was harder than that. So all I need to do is find a parts FJ-60 and an H55F, and I will have most of the parts I will need? I like the sound of that.
Stevens Creek Toyota in Santa Clara California has them for that price. I called and asked for the list price and it was $2288, then asked for the TLCA price and it was $1560.60 for part# 33030-60450. They don;t like giving people the TLCA price over the phone unless they know who you are, they have had many people calling in trying to use other people's names to get thier discout ( I am one of those people who has been impersonated there before, but this person was trying to return parts as well as buy them, but they know who I am so it didn;t work ) also they probably don't like loosing their mark-up on parts either. Another thing about SC Toyota is they don;t take phone orders, at least for people they don;t know, and I don;t think they ship, bit I live 5 minutes away.
