My alternator is shot and my first instinct was to rebuild it with some new brushes and voltage regulator. Someone then told me the brushes and VR were more expensive than a reman OEM alt. I looked on the 80 board and a bunch of those guys were doing it. Who has dealt with bad alt's on a 62 and what's the best solution for a guy who's decently handy. Do I need both the brushes and VR? pointers? sources? Thanks!

alt replace

mine went out about a month ago. i want to rebuild it but don't have the time. so i bought a new rebuilt oem from partsamerica.com. cost $140, $45 core charge and has a lifetime on it. no shipping fees also.

x2 on finding a good local shop to rebuild it. I got mine rebuilt by a local shop over 10 years ago and it still works fine.

Carquest $129, lifetime warranty. Done in 07.

The PO said the alternator went out at 150000 miles on my truck, he had it rebuilt. 5 years after I bought the truck the alternator went out again, turned out to be a bad regulator, had a local shop replace it for $60.
