So, I have been searching for the 2LO mod for the 62's and haven't found anything other than, "try this, it should work". I decided today to try the 2lo mod and it worked just as advertised in my driveway.

First I located the L4 switch (PS of the TC) that tells the vacuum switch to engage the 4WD. Its the one with two wires to it.

Then I followed the two wires and disconnected the connector on top of the TC.

Last, I taped up the plugs and put them back in their wire clamps.

So there it is, shift from 4HI to 4LO and no light and only the rear wheels have low range power, hit the 4WD button and your in 4LO, shift from 4LO to 4HI and your in 4HI. Just remember to shift the trans to neutral before shifting from HI to LO.
I will be testing a little more this weekend in the dirt.

{Hmm, wonder what happened to my original post?} ANyway, Thanks for posting this up, and def keep us updated after some time in the dirt.

Perhaps we could FAQ this post once it's fully fleshed out?

Whose original post?
Yes, let us know if it works - it will - as advertised once in the dirt. Chicago, did you ever try this out for yourself?

Well, NOPE!
However, I now probably WILL if its that FRICKIN EASY!
So, you just D/C the plug and youre DONE!?

UNBELIEVEABLE!

Ive just been wheelin with the "traditional" set up, and its actaully not all that bad, BUT...again, if its that simple....

Thanks for posting up on this!

You mean that, no matter how easy, someone else has to try a mod and prove its efficacy before you will give it a try? Now me_tu05 will get all the credit and the inevitable outpouring of mud love that could have been yours!

My post. I had posted in this thread similarly to what you see above, but it was lost to the interweb.

As far as credit, no worries. I for one remember who posted up having a busted switch on their TC, that acted like our desired '2-lo mod'.

Cool idea, whoever figured it out.

Let's see a turn towards tech in this thread:

Does it for sure work? I'm not completely clear what to do on the wiring. Can you elaborate?

You just unplug the wire, this kills the signal to engage 4WD when you shift into 4lo. It really only takes a couple of minutes. I will get good use of it this weekend when I drive up the mountain to go wheeling.

Re read it and it makes lots of sense. I'll try it out at the ride in Memphis this weekend.

My vacuum valve conversion basically did exactly the same thing as your mod, in that it took the electronic switch that engages 4WD out of the equation when shifting into low range. Hi/Lo are now via the mechanical linkage, and 2WD/4WD are controlled via the vacuum valve.

Oh yeah, and yay no solenoids

This was not a long known approach? All the guys with '62 that come through the shop have been running this since... well... th first time through th shop? :)

Not exactly anything that calls for "testing" guys... do it and drive.

Mark...

i have an 89 parts truck that i am pulling parts from for my 12ht conversion and on it it only has low and 2high. if your transfer case is vacummed which i assume it is the only option to go into 4high is the push button right?

Hey spook50, you should put a write up of your version on here so there is another way to do it. That could make it more convenient for other people to find all the info they need and give them a choice of which to use.

I've had one in the works since I finished this mod something like two years ago :whoops:

I suppose while I have the dash torn apart for my electric fan wiring would be a good opportunity to get the rest of the pics I need to finish the writeup...
