Fj60 VS. FJ62

Alright. i know off the bat alot of you may say you the search button and i did but did not fin what i wanted. And i know what i am going to ask may be a worn out subject but i still want your input. I am considering buying a new cruiser within the next yr.(granted i sell my 40) I am looking to get either an fj60 or a 62. Will be a DD and mild offroader. I know for sure i will want it lifted and what not. In your all's opinions what would be better. i have owned two 60's and two 80's one with the small engine. I have heard the 62's are more expenseive to keep up and the partsd are harder to get. the 62 would be a better highway truck and easier to drive than a 60 with the auto. Well any opinions would be appreciated. thanks

So wait, do you own the two 60's currently? Or...

It depepnds on what you are looking for.
If you want an auto: buy a 62.
If you want a manual: buy a 60 (preferably with an H55F).
If you want power windows etc.: buy a 62.
If you don't like the square lights: buy a 60.
If you already own two 60's: try a 62.
If you want it cheap: Your best bet would be a 60.

Just posted this over on the 3FE list too, so pardon the cross post.

I think to a large degree you can have it both ways, daily driver and very competent trail rig. I have that in my 62 now. Lots of built 80 owners do too (60s, 55s, 40s too). The trick is not to go a step too far. My 55 was a competent trail rig and good daily driver until I sprung it over and put 36" Swampers on it. After that it was an awesome trail rig and a not so good daily driver. Tipped the balance too far toward the trail. My 62 is a nice balance -- goes great off road, within reason, and is an enjoyable daily driver.

I think the best way to judge whether to buy a 62 or a 60 is to picture them both in your driveway on your worst day. You have the flu, feel like hell, it's pouring rain, 40 degrees, and you absolutely have to go somewhere. Which one do you drive? Your answer is the one you should buy.

i would and did buy the 62 - auto, 4.11 gears, 3FE, power package, fuel injected, yada, yada, yada, i could go on and on. i am not into the shifting mode any more. i have to admit i like the round headlights of the 60, but there are more pros to the 62 than the con of the rectangular headlamps

the 62 might be a little more expensive but usually they have less rust because they are newer. the auto is great. so yeah 3fe power is awesome, fuel injection, 4.11 gears just like jjbodean1970 said. oh and the 62 has better mirror too.

So my choice would be a fj-62 just like i currently have. if you are going to make it way hardcore and swap out the axles engine etc you may as well buy the 60 so you can save money.

thanks alot. and yes we currently have two fj60's. i think as far as daily driving the 62 is more practicle and the 4.11's would work nice with 33's i think. the whole 40 degree flue thing made me think alot. Now the question is how much would i pay for a decent 62 with say under 160k miles, lifted, tinted windows, cd player, roof rack. Thats at least what i would like to have one day. nevertheless, thanks alot

I run 33's and 4.11s, and will say it's tolerable. No problem around town, but pretty sluggish on the highway. If I were to keep my 62 (which fits all your criteria and then some, short of 184,000 miles and I removed the window tint) I'd put 4.88s in it one day.

You can get 4.30's too. Many people for get that. They may fit better at times than lower gears.

For a daily driver in town the 3FE is nice. Other than the 3FE, I would say get a 60. I like the fact that it does not have electric windows, locks, etc. 60s have a little more style points, but I'm baised; I own a 60.

Kaderabek has a good suggestion. Which one are you willing to deal with in the worst situation?

ok so say i get a 62 with stock gearing and get 33's. I decide i want to go to 4.30's or 4.56's. Does anyone know what the average shop would charge to put those in? thanks Also, Kaderabek, do you have any links to pics or more info on your 62?

hey that cold rainy 40 deg thing can swing either way...what if your super stoked to go for a ride??? what would ya want to climb into?? if ya live near a city and do a alot of in town the 62 might not be a bad idea, but looking at your sig line it doesnt look like ya could keep that my cruisers in a city...so i go for a 60...as above was said style points...

I seldom drive mine over 75, but I'm a geezer. It'll go faster though, no doubt about that. Just take you a day or so and a stiff tailwind to get there.
