have 1985 fj60, since we have had it we have not adjusted the valves, we have given it a tune-up, it is reliable just runs like hell, not dying but rough when going slow in town, like its dying for air

would adjusting valves help that
should I rebuild the carb???

also has shackle lift, rides rough, is that the springs that go bad or is it because of the shackle lift, has new shocks

Welcome to MUD!

There could be several things going on with your 60...

Did you set the timing when you did a tune-up? If so, what did you set it to? Did you adjust the carb at all? What method did you use to set it?

Do the springs look flat? What kind of shocks did you put on? 60 springs tend to sag out after a while...

can you hear the valves?

I am only guessing that the guy "timed" it when he did the tune-up, I do not think he did anything to tune the carb??

are there some specs I need to have to give the guy that does the work or can he look up that in his literature???

yea, the leaf springs are pretty flat, the shocks were not off road shocks, we gottem from les schwab

and no, i cannot hear the valves, at least I don't think i can, it just sounds normal

if the valves arent making noise i wouldnt bother right now.
my 85 has flat springs and rides like s*** also.
i had to adjust my mixture and idles to get mine running good.
on the motor side of the carb is the mixture screw. if it has a cap i wouldnt mess with it.
if it doesnt then you may need to adjust there is a method. if he cant find it in the literature come back here. also check all your vaccuum lines and would definitely check the timing
p.s. check the timing and vaccum lines first.
did he change the cap and rotor when he did the tune up?
also i have heard and have had personal experience with bosch plugs being s***ty.

sorry to hack yur thread bro

but mine has been doing this FOREVER now. exactly the way it was described in this thread. i only feel the "hesitation" when im cruising thru town. i dont feel it when im gas'n it. ive done a complete tune-up, had JimC rebuild my carb, and changed out ALL of my vacuum hoses. this REALLY sucks. it feels like its gasping for gas/air. i can REALLY feel it when im doing 20mph in 2nd. could my timing be off? guess i need to chack that now....-other sean

also changing my fuel filter did wonders

hey lowtide. mines actually got the end broken off into my carburator. do you have any idea how this might happen. no adverse affects as of yet besides the deiseling. but i have to dig it out when i get my new one. but am just curious how that might happen.

wait no. that was me.

Sorry for the Hi-Jack...

Hullendersauce -

Still doin' that, huh?? Bummer. Did you have a chance to talk with the guys at Import Specialists?

hullendersauce thats exactly what mine does

lowtide ride, what/where is the fuel cutoff solnoid

brett,, I'll check that other stuff out tomorrow morn and get back to ya, we did the fuel filter deal, were stuck!!!

I'd check vacuum first. When the tune up was done maybe a vacuum line was left off or accidentally pulled off when messing with the cap.

I'd check the vacuum lines coming off the dist. No holes, cracks, disconnected ones, etc.

i buhlee its the green solenoid thing mounted to the side of the carb.
i think mine is either timing (which i believe is set at 7), a vacuum hose still wrong, or something w/in the EGR CRAP! ill post up when i figure it out. -other sean

It is the solinoid that cuts off the fuel supply, often the ground is bad and needs to be grounded...just get a few feet of wire and ground it and see if it makes any difference...

it is the green plug on the carb...

I had the same thing happening to my truck for a long time and tryed everything except for that because i never thought it would make a difference...boy was i wrong its like driving a diffrent truck now...

seriously man, try it out and see if it works....all ya need is a section of wire...

Mine has two wires. I assume the green is the ground. Is that correct? And where in the engine compartment did you ground it to
