finally made up my mind about a swap

putting in a 4bd1t...should be here next week sometime

next week i'm placing my order with isuzudieselswapper to get my 4bd1 to SBC bellhousing.

going to use a ranger torque overdrive to hold the mess together allowing me to hopefully run with no drivetrain modification. Giving me a little more clearance at the front diff by pushing the engine closer to the radiator.

Will have to use an electric slim line fan but that means extra HP...think i can take one out of one of my dads old fieros to use.

Hoping for 20+mpg around town and a little more UMPH to tow my boat (hopefully a sail boat come next spring so i can go to the keys and see some poor oil coated manatee :( )

I'll take pics as parts come in and the assembly goes along. With my luck it will take a long time...being a newly wed the wifey doesn't like me hanging out in the garage to long...or on MUD/Craigslist which she refers to as my man porn.

Trust me, newly wed, 5 years, 15 years, it doesn't get any better. If they don't get it from the start they never will. Just make sure you take care of her and she will give you your cruiser time. I can't count how many times I have had to agree to go shopping or somthing jsut because I new I would be asking to work in the garage all day soon.;) I think they call'em brownie points, collect all you can and cash in when needed.

Good luck with the swap. That's a nice engine, and I hear it works well with these tanks we call Cruisers.

when it's time for the install i'll have to invite alot of you guys over for alot of beer! ALOT of beer!

Search for HenryC's princess. I saw it out in TX a few years ago after he had done this swap...it was pretty amazing!

thanks for the link!

another guy from Florida has also done the swap (using h55f) but it's only useable on the hwy because of his 37" tires (which is why i'm using the ranger OD instead of the H55F) I would use the NV4500 but i'm poor and don't want the wife to beat me with a rubber hose if she saw the credit card statement for the price i'd pay for having custom shafts made and custom adapters for my TC.

I don't follow? What about the H55f and the 37" tires makes the ranger OD better. If anything the lower 1st gear of the H55 would be better than the H42 and still have overdrive.

With 37" tires you have double overdrive, so I would think it would actually be better off-road than on-road.

Jeremy

another 60 cruiser with 37" tires and an H55f cruises at 70 right 2100 rpms...my 31" tires on an H55f would probably put it at the 2400-2550rpm....the highest rpm that you want to use cruising on the 4bd1t is @2300.

The ranger overdrive on my H42 and current tires (i won't put on bigger tires because i'm not lifting any more than an inch or two over stock and i don't like skinny 33's) will get me 70mph at about 2200...pretty much perfect.

and I know that my tranny/tc has less than 85K on it so it has tons of life left on it as opposed to a used H55F that would be risking the age/condition..

If i had the cash i suppose i could do an H55F + ranger OD but i don't want to go over 70 in a cruiser other than to pass...seems unsafe!!!!

I don't wheel much...this is my dd. It's also our camping/roadtrip rig which is the sole purpose of putting in a more efficient/reliable engine. it will be nice to make the trip from s'ville to my parents place at oconee point everyweekend with WVO rather than spending 30 bucks at the pump everytime i go! It's bad enough filling up the boat with 16gal of the ethanol free high octane stuff. Can't wait til the wife gives me an ok on the sailboat!

I don't know what combo he had, but he put it in low, got out and walked along side it while it inched forward.

Update: Had to go to H55F . Ranger OD is on back order til Dec and looks like a lift would be required with the engine sitting 7" futher forward and i'm still anti lifting.

engine comes today

just ordered the H55F/tc this morning

the fj62 pedal/throttle cable assy come in early next week.

still have to order:
SBC to L/C adapter
Isuzudieselswaper adapter
motor mounts
motor mount brackets

once it's in:

i'll have to add a bigger fuel filter assy

drain all the gas from the tank

get custom made p/s pressure hose and the return line is just bulk hose

pick up some exhaust tubing so i can route the downpipe from turbo to the existing exhaust (isuzu engine is same side as 2f)

make a custom bracket to fit the 2F AC compressor to the isuzu engine (hopefully the crank pulley has an extra V on it)

weld the diesel spout into my filler neck

add an EGT gauge

install a tiny tach

I'll start taking/posting pics when engine arrives today so long as i'm not knee deep in lawn mowers from all the rain we had last night

just pressure washed...sorry for the crappy pic

rigged up my old 2f radiator and got the engine running on the shipping crate today.

Went ahead and ordered a gasket set to make sure this thing leaks NO oil...this will probably be one of only a few fj60's that will have no leaks in the south east!

my throttle cable assy came in

ran into a snag on my H55F, before it was shipped out it was inspected and they found some issues with it. Will have to pay a little more but it will be fully rebuilt along with a freshening up of the TC.

Will be nice knowing i have a high mileage relaible rig for years to come.

I need to find an ABS sensor to fab up a tach sending unit

Need to get any remote mount p.s. resevrior and mounting bracket

need to get a response back from a fellow mud member so i can order my SBC/LC adapter

need to sell some parts to fund the rest of this experiment!

after taking measurments of both engines looks like fitment without a lift should be doable.

Just curious where you got your H55 from and what a used trans is worth now days.

Toyota feels the new H55F is worth about 1800 (bare tranny)

SOR sells rebuilt h55 wiht rebuilt tc for a little under 3 complete shifter and all

at SOR almost 4K for a new t/c and tranny

Then a fully used one with no warranty is about 2K with TC

used/private sellers are usually about half that price for used

I've seen them sold used by mud members for as little as 750 but around 1300 complete with tc is about average.'

it seems that private sellers who put used h55f/tc up around 1500-1700 bucks get flamed pretty quickly for being overpriced in the classified forums.

used H42 four speeds sell for as little as a hundred bucks for trany alone with high mileage up to 500 bucks for low milage trannys depending on if they include the t/c and other goodys. If your in the market for one of those 4 speeds that are low milage then you need to hit me up lol

I purchased mine from a very reputable Mud member that imports/rebuilds engines Lynchmob. Very nice guy, really knows his stuff.

I paid a little less than the going rate of the used h55/tc combo complete with shift.

He had not gone into tranny yet (it was not yet advertised for sale) but i hit him up for one.

He offered pics and i informed him that pics do me no good as i'm not a tranny guru and if he felt it looked good when he removed the top then it was good enough for me.

When he inspected it, it has 2nd gear gear/syncro damage.

He immediately sent me pics and was willing to give me a full refund and after talking to him about the price of a rebuild and seeing what my sources were for another H55 i decided a rebuild was my best decision for the buck

If it wasn't for mud members this project would have never started.

Sounds like you should have went with an NV4500 then if you want to go 70 and don't want taller tires.

You could cruise at 75 with an NV4500 and be pulling 2200 rpm's.

I think an NV4500 bolts up to a 4bt easier as well. It seems to be the popular combo on a lot of Jeep conversions.

However, I like the H55f Toyota tranny, so my vote would be to regear to 3.55's or get some tall skinnies. 33's don't look to big on a 60 and you will still be getting some killer mileage out of that thing.

the 4bt does bolt up easily to the nv4500 as it's the same bolt pattern as the 6bt but what i have is an isuzu engine not a cummings engine, and you have to get a custom kit to mate the 4bd1/2 to the NV4500 which cost the same as the kit to match the isuzu to the LC/sbc adapter bellhousing.

after much research my 31" tires will carry me at 70mph at @ 2500 -2700 rpms which is only about 150-350 rpms away from my goal and still a safe cruising rpm. In tow i'll probably want to slow down to 60-65

The H55 is also much cheaper than the 3K i would spend on a rebuilt nv4500 +isuzu adapter + shifter assy parts + t/c adapter+ drive shaft mods

It's hard to beat the H55F, it bolts in with no mods (on post 85 up cruisers, i don't remember what month in 85 they changed).

It might not be as beefy as the NV4500 but i'm not throwing a huge cummings engine in my vehicle that puts out 400+ lbs torque

I've thought about some 33"s but i don't want to go with skinnies as i'm not much a fan of my 31x10.5.

my front leafs are great, my rears are shot and i have to have the 2.5 over stock shackles just to keep the rears at stock height along with some beefy shocks.

with new OEM height springs + my 2.5 over stock shackles i think i can pull off some 33x12.5 tires with a little wider rim.

But that is still way down the line. This is a budget swap!

stole an electric fan off of one of my dads junk fieros

ordered my clutch kit, 2.5 mandrel bends/flex joint for a custom down pipe(will be routed into the 2.5 exhaust that i have now)

ordered a tem. sensor/relay kit to power the electric fan

ordered the abs sensor so i can use my stock in dash tach

the AA kit should arrive tomorrow

lynchmob should be back anyday now and hope to hear good news about a tranny rebuild.

If things go well i'll be ordering my IDS on monday and all i have left are motor mounts/brackets to make and i really need the 2F out in order to do that. Also need to make the AC comressor bracket. Custom P/S lines will have to be made but again...need the engine in the vehicle to do this

Will possibly have to order a 2f pilot bearing

still need a diesel filler neck to steal the center out of

can you explain the abs sensor and how you are going to use it for the tach. You dont need the diesel filler neck either trust me just take yours out and drill the spot welds out, the nozzle of the pump at the station will fit in it.

ok..lol...i was going to grind mine out and spot weld weld one from a junk vehicle at LKQ in but i guess it doesn't matter if it's a gaping hole there.

mount the abs sensor above any part of the engine like a flat spot on the crank pulley or flywheel.

drill 3 holes equal or notch flat area at equal spots to disrupt the magnetic pull while the engine is running

those 3 pulses simulate the 3 pulses your 2f tach gets from your dizzy.

thus you run your stock tach on pretty much any given 2 wire abs sensor.

sure thing. I'll be starting on all this stuff later next week.

It will work on any engine so long as you can put 3 equal notches/holes in the surface.

search astr on here. He has a write up where he did it on his isuzu swap.
