Hey all,

Having some starting trouble. Earlier, drove the car to town and it was totally fine. Turned it off for 45 seconds - as much time as it takes to run up to a porch - and when I got back, wouldn't start. Got it started by bumping it down the hill, and it ran totally fine all the way home, and normal idling at stop lights. Now it won't start again, even when being jumped. It will only start and idle really rough if you hold the gas pedal down while cranking. Then if you let off the gas it will die. When trying to start, has a really strong gas smell and some sputtering black smoke out the tailpipe. A few things of note:

- It's got a brand new battery in it but the "volts" gauge on the dash is low (bumps up a bit and hovers around 12v when jumping it)
- Sometimes when we turn it off, it will sputter for a few seconds before dying.
- Just replaced all spark plugs and wires tonight.
- New engine air filter
- New clutch master cylinder & slave cylinder (this wouldn't be the issue, but maybe we bumped something while we were down there?)
- Plenty of gas - definitely hisses when you open the gas cap

Any insight much appreciated! Happy Friday!

Really strong gas smell and sputtering black smoke sounds like too much fuel. Check the fuel level in the carb sight glass. The engine will not run if it’s drowning in fuel. I had a similar situation when my float failed and filled with fuel which caused it to sink and pumped too much fuel into the bowl. HTH

I checked that. Level right in the middle of sight glass. Engine will run, it just won’t start

Have you checked your FUEL FILTER?
