In the process of planing to turn my 1983 FJ60 into a expo rig. I have wheeled it a few times and come to find out i like the expo set up better. Not really into rock crawling. Me and my wife like driving around seeing the sights and camping, and a expo rig makes more sense for us.
Have not seen alot of people doing fj60 builds so i thought i might give it a try. Going to document every thing also give websites of where I bought the stuff.
To make this a good rig I will be focusing on a few areas of improvident:
Lighting/Electrical.
-will need to do a upgrade kit on head lights. The head lights on these sucks.
-add some more lighting. Thinking of going with LED light bars. They are really bright and use hardly any power.
-changing all lights but head lights to LEDs. Less power used+less gas used= longer time in the field befor fueling.
-2nd battery. Going to use to optima's a red for starting and a yellow for winching and other. Going to use the 12 volt guys winch+battery panel.

Diesel Engine.
-I want to switch to a diesel engine for gas mileage purposes. But do not know which one i am gonna pick. I want to stay with a US mechanical engine. Doing this for ease of parts and if i blow a fuse/alt dies i will not be stuck. Also i think the 2f would have enough power to move 1000lbs of axles but at the cost of gas mileage. Right now i get 16mpg i bet it would drop to 6-10mpg.
-options are
Isuzu 4BD1T/2T-Need to find a adapter to fit.
Cummins 3.3 or 4bta
Mercedes inline 5 or 6
And any other suggestions.
Transmission.
-Would like to keep the 4 spd for price. But on some of these i will have to trade it out unless some one know's of a adapter that would work for those above diesels.
Drive train.
-Would really like to do portals been doing some searching and think i will go with Unimog 404 axles. Doing this for two reason 1 can't really find Volvo C303 and 2 parts are pretty easy to find.
-I looked into getting ARB lockers for my axles i have now and there about $2000 for them. On a few sights and forums i have found the Unimog axles for $1200-$2400.
Tires/Rims.
-More to follow on those. If any one has some suggestions of what they are running i would love to hear about it.
Storage.
-All ready have roof rack. Going to need a rear bumper for tire and fuel cans. Might go with a pre cut weld your own rear bumper.
-Going to go with a storage raised bed in the back like i have seen in some of the FJ60.
Fuel.
-Want to get or make a aux fuel tank. Need to look into has a good quality to low price tank. If any one has any suggestion on a good one that they are using that would be great.
Winch/Recovery.
-Leaning towards a Mile marker 9500lbs or 12000lbs winch depending on loaded weight.
Radio.
-Still looking into this. Right now i have a cheapo Copra $40 dollar radio may upgrade may not.
If any one has any suggestions i am open to them. Going to be starting up on it this upcoming year. Going to get front axle 2013 and next axle 2014. May also get Engine in 2013 just going to see were funds are at how cheap i can get stuff.
Also as i go along some items will be up for sale like 2f engine, rebuilt front axle, rear axle, and maybe trans depending on how it goes.
