Seeking Engine & Transmission Options:

I'm looking for engine/transmission options for my 85 FJ60. Currently have the body and frame separated as I'm swapping on a rust free FJ62 frame. Since mounts will need to be changed (and will be sandblasting and powder coating once complete) I'm thinking now is the time to make a decision on upgrading engine/tranny/etc.

What are peoples experiences and insights on this? I live in New England and want to be able to daily drive this (minus winter) and also have it be a worthy cross-country road trip vehicle. Thinking the H55 would be a good options as well.

Anyone have experience with Mosley Motor Hi Performance 2F upgrades?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome! I frequent Vermont as I'm a ski patroller at Bromley. I'm in the process of installing a rebuilt 2F with bigger valves and larger factory pistons giving me a 4.4l engine. Hopefully others will chime in who can speak directly to the performance of the Mosley engines and @FJ60Cam is a board member here. As far as transmissions go, I upgraded to the h55 as well. You can also go the LS motor upgrade, depending on your desires. I find the 2F engine perfect for Vermont Class IV roads as the torque greatly reduces the need for feathering the clutch. I'll be taking my 60 out west hopefully in the summer of j2025 and love an inline 6 engine for road trips as they are so smooth!

Some nice Class IV action in southern VT

Hey there - love your 60! I have the same color. What kind of power is the rebuild 2F going to give you? I will eventually use it for some light off-roading on forest roads and getting to campsites, I also want it to be practical to take on long road trips (cruise easy at 75).

Regarding the H55, did you have to do anything to change any mounting brackets or cross-member? Where did you source it from?

Would love to join on those VT adventures once I get mine up and running!

The thread linked below has a lot of good engine swap info

Hello, Since my 60 is a 1985, the h55 was a direct swap. I purchased mine from @cruiseroutfit and am super happy. They are very helpful and shipping was prompt and reasonable, given our location. No affiliation , just a happy customer . As far as engine power goes, I’m guessing I got a bump due to the displacement and better flowing head but that wasn’t my main objective. I wanted a small bump but keep everything as factory as possible. That said, I am adding a Holley sniper as I’m more comfortable tuning fuel injection plus it got rid of the mass of vacuum tubes in the engine bay.

I am in Vermont but my 60 has been hiding in the garage for a while with what I suspect is a bad rod bearing. I picked up a 62 parts rig with a good 3fe a while ago. I’m not sure what my plan is yet. If I’m lucky I can throw some new bearings I and be back to driving. A 3fe swap isn’t out of the question. And I of course have all the parts to consider a 2FE build.
