FJ60 4 speed transmission and TC in an FJ40

I made the swap a couple of years ago. I kept my 3 speed tcase and used the adaptor gear for the different splines and the two spacers to line everything up correctly. Lessons learned, moving the crossmember back is huge. You keep the parking brake and its accessible. I bought 4 speed drive shafts off of craigslist and correct pinion flanges from cruiser outfitters. But the front drive shaft ended up being too long. So I had a new custom drive shaft made for around $150. I also have a desmogged 2f that I believe is out of a mid 80's fj60. The po kept the original 3 speed transmission and clutch setup accept the push rod for the clutch fork is this crazy non return spring setup that Toyota tried in the 80's. Kind of a pain. I am gonna switch the clutch fork out this spring, just so I have the correct clutch fork and push rod. And I purchased a tcase saver off of mud Also this is the best time to replace seals. Especially the rear main and tranny/tcase. Here's the link to my swap. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for the info BigCity. I am now considering just going with using a recent 4 speed I picked up this weekend and changing the input gear in my stock TC and just running that for the time being. Haven't made up my mind. The overall cost of converting my stock 3 speed tran and tc to a H42 long with split TC are adding up very quickly. I especially like the idea of being able to keep my E-brake if I keep my 3 speed TC.

I haven't been flowing this thread. A few things that is a longer setup than the pre 4/85. That spacer I believe is something Toyota added to keep the length the same as H55F five speed. Only reason I can think of was to standard parts between four speed and five speed. Land Cruiser four speed or five from a post 8/80 cruiser will have a nineteen splines on the tailshaft. The early four speeds were sixteen and had the same mounting pattern as the three speed for the transfer case. On those a kit is available for the gears/bearings/spacers. The thread changed for the bolst to mount to the four speed but the pattern was the same. The split case will not bolt to the early four speed or three speed. The early one piece transfer cases (pre 8/80) with not bolt to the four speed designed for a split transfer case. Cheapest way is still probably finding a early H42. Did this to my 68 over twenty years ago. I kept the clutch fork on the driver's side. Maybe the later bellhousing only were set up for passenger's side the early four speed bellhousing you could do either. If you don't have the hand brake setup to bolt to the back of the split transfer or than the aftermarket disc brake set up the later axles with hand brake are early to source in the US. Since the 73 was already set up for a four speed it's possible the 8/80 to 4/85 T/T combo may work without modifying the torque tube behind the transfer.

If your looking for a early H42 four speed with sixteen spline count inspect the output shaft where the input gear for the transfer case rides. Those are know to wear. Every time your foot is on and off the gas it will slap back and forth.

I have now decided to keep my 3speed TC and modify it to the early h42 4speed Tranny. My problem is now I am in need of the front 2wd & 4wd selector that rides on the TC front nose.

I am hoping to source one of these on MUD.

Also concerned about the other switch mounted on the top of the TC housing. Originally on a 3 speed this faces towards the passenger side. The 4 speed TC seems to face almost forward. Not sure if this is modifiable???

Any thought here guys. I found lots of mentioning about these issues in the FAQ but I've yet to find any resolve or any previous modifications.

So as it sands. 4 speed transmission with my cleaned up 3 speed TC just needs parts.

When I converted my 68 I located a shifter that was the same style as your three shifter. I believe the piece that bolts to the front cone and one other piece were the only two that were different. Either way you need the piece for the front cone because it is longer for either set up. For the hi/lo on the transfer the knob sticking out the top has flat on the wrong side for the later style shifter. I would also find a transmission shifter that hasn't been bent for a use with a V8 unless your already running a V8.
