Hi there fella's..

I have found a BJ42 (Diesel) Tacho for sale, and I was wanting to know if this will work on a petrol motor.

Thanks in advance...

Hi 7.62.

I found one at the wreckers off a BJ too and stuck it on my FJ40 with 2f motor. Although there is a compatible plug on the wiring behind the dash where it goes the diesel tacho didn't work for me. The needle bounces around the guage erratically even while idleing. There are no setting switches on the unit like an all-purpose after market tacho so you can't adjust the unit atleast not from the outside. Whether or not there is something else you can do to make it behave itself (an auto electrician will probably be able to tell you), I don't know.

I left mine attatched because atleast it looks cool when the motor is not running, lol. How sad am I?!!!:D I don't think the diesel tacho goes high enough on the RPM measurement anyway. It may be worth getting just for the tacho surround mount (if it has one?). Atleast you will be able to rig an aftermarket tacho into a real 40 series tacho dash mount. Petrol tacho's are rare as hen's teeth and worth a fortune so atleast you will have the "look" even if its not the real McCoy!

Be careful with the mount though if you can get it just by itself because they are only made of plastic and can be brittle especially around the fixing screws. :)

Thanks for your reply Lupdog.

If it doesnt work, I dont want it. I am curious on the rev's at 100kms I have 31" tires, and it sounds high, still I would like to know.

Even for the low range stuff, its a handy piece of information.
Any suggestions on where I might be able to start looking for a petrol rev counter? Im in Australia too..

I understand that its a magnetic reciever inside the bellhousing, any way to convert it down there?

I wouldn't know where to start looking for a original petrol one. Like I said they are really rare. I asked my mechanic about them once and he said they were worth about 500 bucks and that was about 8 years ago I think. You could start at toyota spare parts dealer(don't like your chances but you never know). Specialty 4wd parts guys, you would have to be ultra lucky to find anyone willing to part with a privately owned one or at wreckers. Maybe you might track one down from Japan???? Just ask everyone you can think of. A google search may turn up something????

As for the magnetic reciever, I'm not sure how they work. Auto electrician or mechanic who's into Cruisers would be a good place to ask.

Good luck!:)

I thought the diesel tach ran off a pickup on the bell housing and a magnet on the flywheel .
