On my new white on white '77 FJ40 that arrived last week it is my plan to go back to the factory steel wheel with center cap and run a BFG 10.50" x 33" tire. With what I expect are the original leaf springs flexing the current 31" tires here is my question.

How should I accomplish the necessary lift to fit the new 33" tires?
New springs, if so which would you recommend?
Longer shackles, if so which would you recommend?

A couple cruisers ago I bought a used set of Bilstein shocks from Murph. Anybody know the appropriate part number for Bilsteins? I just need a longer shock not a lift shock.

Unfortunately I have no clue about the suspension but the pic of the kids is great. They look pretty excited. Cheers!

OME is an easy bolt up solution giving about 2.5" of lift with a great ride. Dave Gore of 4Plus has Dunbar spring make leafs and with his reverse front shackle system you get 4" of lift with a comfortable ride. I cannot recommend the 4" HFS lift, it rides like a brick!

Good luck! N

Skyjackers 4" - springs sag soon enough, so why not plan for a bit extra - longer shackles wouldn't be needed

Suspension is not the only project. Shout out to Camelback Toyota, Murph, and his guys for being so nice and helpful.

Colin: When you come pick up parts, come see me about an idea I have about this for you

Murf

Rearcheding my factory leaf springs +1" ($65 each if I remove them), Bilstein 5125 series 10" shocks $80/each, New greaseable shackles +1" and pins $260, Bushings $40. I think this will be the route I take.

Was this Murf recommendation or did you come up with this?

Murf had these bilstein's on his FJ40 which ended up on a previous 40 of mine. Rearching leaf springs was his suggestion. And if you are doing all that work might as well upgrade the shackles and replace bushings.

I had my FJ62 springs re-arched years ago. What made it easy was already had other springs on the vehicle. Those springs ended on Murf's red 60. Doing it yourself doing one spring at a time makes the process easier. Besides being safer with only one wheel off the ground at a time. Having the axle stable makes it easier. I have some 40 springs laying around. Not good enough to use but could keep everything in place while springs are being re-arched.

Those springs worked great John!

The spring place is a drive up - drop off - pick up. They do all the R&R labor which is easy for them.

...I miss my 60

Guess I misunderstood. Thought in post ten he said he was doing all the work.
That was a nice 60. If I was younger and had fewer Cruisers would like to own. But at least I have FJ62.

This is a different red FJ60 - but it does looks similar. This is one I had about 3 years ago that I had spent well over a year restoring as my "toy" then as I finally reached it being completely finished, Phil told me he was selling his tan FJ40. I quickly sold the 60 through the MUD classifieds to a guy out of British Columbia that flew and drove it home. The next day in Northern California he called and asked how to put it in 4WD because it was snowing hard...

I then turned around and bought the 40 that I have now. :steer:

Bilsteins are the bomb on a 40
