FJ40 stalling, fuel pump problem?

With new fuel pumps and lines that aren't blocked I'd guess a sticking float or inlet valve.

You have done everything but rebuild the carb. I think numby is right on here.

I am going through the same thing and I have rebuilt the carb. I am going to replace the fuel pump tomorrow and see if it helps.

I'm in the same boat. It ran great last night not a problem then today it wouldn't start then when it fired it idled at 2k and wouldn't go down so I turned it off fired it up and it won't stay alive unless I have my foot on the gas and even then it's idling rough. Let me know what you come up with I might need a new fuel pump

i have the same issues, did it work out after changing the fuel pump

No , I went deeper.....I pulled engine....its in parts in my garage now

My fuel pump was a bit worn, so it was working but pumping fuel a bit slower than the new one that i replaced it with, now i don't have that issue anymore

I.m having the same issue on my newest 1978 FJ, Mine lurches like it is starving. Runs great until on open road getting up to max speed in 3 or 4th gear. Took it to carb expert today, hope the can fix. Let us know what you all find .

The 78' I had(rest her soul) had the same issue. It was part fuel delivery/ part ignition. I replaced the stock carb with a weber, fuel pump, fuel filter, dizzy and coil and added a pressure regulator. The problem never returned!

It does sound like vapor lock.

Just pull the fuel line off the fuel filter and listen to hear if any vacuum is released.

Another possibility is the cooling fan. Not sure about the 78 but my 79 has a fan that will come on to prevent vapor lock. I can hear it when I shut the ignition off. It runs for a while to cool the carb. Could be the fan or the relay.

I had the same problem and it was my fuel tank. I had taken the old one out and cleaned it with a high pressure water hose and let it dry in the AZ heat for a week. I put it back in the cruiser and it did the same thing. I bought a new tank from Cruiser Dan it and be running fine for 4,000 miles.

I have heard this from about 3 folks now ( changing tank fixed issue). It the carb rebuild and line clean out does not fix, I guess I will pull the tank if it is not already new(have not pulled the seat yet on my new one).

I had to put vent holes in the rubber boot around my gas cap. It sealed so well that eventually a vacuum was created in the tank, and the fuel pump was unable to overcome it. After a few minutes everything was fine for a while. One time when it did it, I opened the gas cap and there was a big WHOOSH as air rushed in. Put the holes in the skirt and have not had a problem since.

Got her back today and she runs incredible. New electric fuel pump (was only trickling gas) and carburator needed to have the jets re-ported. Engine was just starving for fuel.

Find a great mechanic that works on Volkswagons- they will know how to troubleshoot and fix carburator and fuel issues. I even filled up with mid grade gas and I think I was going 65 on the intersate and it was smooth sailing.

My friend, i have the very same problems with my FJ40 have you managed to find the culprit.

Yes did you read my post? Fuel pump and carb needed to be reported (holes drilled).

I've been fighting this problem on my project FJ for almost 2 years. I bought a new carb, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel line, set the timing, checked for vacuum leaks, checked the tank, checked all wiring, had someone else tune it, and so much more... With a little patience this weekend I decided to dig into it a little more. I couldn't get it to stay running so i checked the float level again and it was low. (i have a holley carb in case anyone was wondering) I adjusted the float level up and it wouldn't budge. Pulled the fuel line and let the pump fill up an empty bottle, it did. So i took off the carb bowl cover to investigate. The bowl was fine. I then tried to blow through the fuel fitting and noticed a total blockage. There was a porous brass/copper fuel filter in there that was completely clogged. I had no idea it was in there or I would have removed it a long time ago. Runs great. Not sure if this will help anyone else but it was my problem. I re-tuned it and so far, problem free. I hope this helps out someone else.
