I am in the process of rebuilding my Transfer case.I dont have plans on installing my PTO because of right know my winch needs some fabrication done to it and also the headers im running does not allow room for the driveline..But in the future i would like to put the winch back on.If i put the pto gear back in the transfercase do i have to have the pto gear box installed on the transfercase? The used transfercase i purchased did not have a pto gear and there is a long spacer to keep the gear from sliding back and forth on the output shaft. My thinking is you cannot because the gear would be able to slide of the output shaft and may cause dammage? Just not sure.

Thanks
Brian

You can run the pto gear and the block off plate instead of the pto box.

Or you can put the spacer on.

You need one, or the other.

So there is no way for the input gert and pto gear to slide back and forth on the output shaft and hit each other. There will be a inch or so gap in between the two gears.

Maybe there is no gap ill have to check it out this afternoon. Thanks

behind the PTO gear or spacer (which ever you choose to use) there is a bearing, then washer, and then a nut screws on the end of the shaft. This tightens everything up and there should not be any freeplay for any gears or spacers to slide on the shaft.

Actually, there is an additional spacer that takes the place of the rear output PTO gear on the transmission output shaft after the transmission main shaft support bearing you referenced in the transfer case and the large flat washer and nut.
This rear output PTO would bolt onto the one piece transfer case where the tin cone cover is attached. Typically, this PTO box was used to run a water pump on Land Cruiser fire trucks.

I've got one of these rear mount PTOs. I misplaced it for about 10 years and just recently found it. Now I just have to come up with some reason to install it. Maybe along with the side mount unit already in my primary '40... can never have to many levers in the floor after all. ;)

I have a rear mount ramsey PTO box.

No clue what to do with it either. Apparently they are not that strong.

And nice Orion ;)

I've got one of those rear mount Ramseys too. Not impressed. The Ramsey winch that it served is decent though.
