I just recently got some hard doors for the fj40. This was fun and I learned and am continuing to learn.

Interestingly, the cabin is quieter than the bestop two piece fabric doors up until about 30mph. Any faster than that and I get an amazing whistling noise. I can stop the whistling by opening a window on either side.

Do you think this whistling is coming from these four holes in the windshield top? What are these four holes for?

The whistling does not stop by pressing on the fabric top while driving.

I guess it could also be at the gap between top of door, top of windshield and bestop?

Maybe I need these just to fill the holes and maybe help with whistling?

Windshield Exterior
These are the bolts for top exterior of a 40 windshield, which are the ones that clamp the front lip of the hardtop to the windshield frame.

not where the noise is coming from.
though it would be wise to put some fasteners in them so the frame doesn't get soaked inside on wet days.
a soft top will never be anywhere near as quiet as a hardtop, one noise will beget another noise.

Anyone ever find a solution to this. I have a hardtop on mine and with the full doors on there is a whistle that starts at 30 and gets LOUD on the highway. Cracking a window will kill it so it's some pressure differential somewhere.

Yes. A cheap and easy solution.
All early LandCruisers were designed with this whistle feature built in because the Toyota engineers knew that the only proper way to drive a LandCruiser was with the driver's window all the way down and the driver's elbow sticking out. Making it all the easier to return the waves from other LandCruisers you see on the road.
Sorta like an early seat belt buzzer.
Inadvertently left out of the owner's manual, the solution is to always operate the vehicle with as many windows rolled down as possible.

Had a similar issue with the Xtra cab wing window in my 94 toy pickup. Found the source of my obnoxious whistle with 2" wide masking tape- start taping up suspected gaps then test driving till you find the spot that makes it go away, (mine was the leading edge of that window) then you can focus on that area to pinpoint the source and figure out a repair. Good luck.

Between the wind, rattles and other random noise that comes with FJ40 life I’ve never noticed a whistle in my 40!

Custom molded shooting earplugs solves all that and gives a nice pleasant driving experience much like the Lincoln Navigator commercials!

Ya, I've taped up the entire top, bottom and sides of the windshield, the wing windows and leading edge of the door. It's still there and it comes from both sides of the truck. At 60+ it's very hard to talk/yell over.

Got a light bar or any other exterior accessories? I had a led light bar that would make an OBNOXIOUS LOUD whistle at 65-75 mph. Had it mounted on the front bumper. Still loud enough to be hard to ignore from the cab. Only discovered it was the source as I prepped the truck to sell and pulled the bar off.

My doors whistle too. It comes from the the little windows that pivot. They sell better rubber for them but they still whistle a little. Just crack a window.
