I am running Rancho 44044s in the front. They are a little too tall for my liking, but they flex very well. I also put my shackle under the frame and I plan to finally put them thourgh the frame this winter. I have coilovers in the rear.

The axle doesn't really have anything to do with the required rate of the spring and in my humble opinion the 44044s suck, large.

I see the gist of the question. It's not so much a worry about spring rate - as much as what does an axle that's almost twice as heavy - being unsprung - are there any issues.

I can't see any - but am getting ready to throw a 14 bolt under my 40 and have been contemplating what could go wrong. SOA, stock weak springs, and a wrap bar. This is temporary - until I have the rest of the funds to buy the few link items I need - and the time to hack, link and recage my ride...

The real number that you need to be concerned with is distance from center line to top of perch, you should do all that you can to minimize that distance to best control wrap.
