I'm a MUD-virgin :o in need of some technical guidance. I've recently acquired a '78 FJ40 (350 Chev/TH400) with drums on the front (Australia). Wishing to upgrade to discs, I have an opportunity to buy a complete front axle/diff assembly from a 1982 FJ40 with stock discs. Am I able to do a complete swap or are there some differences? (pinion flange?) Alternatively I could do the knuckle/outer assy exchange but that's a lot more work. Your advice would be much appreciated. :)

You can swap the axles but the gear ratio may be different. It is in the US, but I don't know about Oz.

Also your going to have to pull the residual check valve out of your master cylinder or your brakes are going to drag. I am speaking from a previous encounter haha.

I think you are correct about the different ratios. Presumably I could swap the diff centres to keep the same ratios?

Forgot to mention that I would also be bringing over the '82 master cylinder/booster assy. Thanks for the input so far.

Yes you could swap the third members if the ratios were different.
