Hey all,

Quick question... As spring/summer approaches I'm thinking about taking the 45's top off. Has anyone ever fitted a factory fj40 roll bar on a 45? I know that having a separate bed which will flex a bit might make the 40 roll bar move a bit, but other than that, what are some opinions from the 45 gurus about this approach? I have a fj40 bikini top sitting in my garage, and I will need a roll bar of some kind to fit the bikini top to. There is a really reasonable fj40 roll bar on craigslist, and it would be cheaper and sturdier than a custom bent piece of tubing... Thoughts? Cheers, Joel

It would not be sturdier than a piece of tubing. They really aren't that strong and they have a bolt together joint. I think a headache rack looking bar mounted right to the bed would look and perform better.

Either way mount it in the bed. Don't go from the cab to the bed.

Or do a front cage

Something like this mounted at the front of the bed, then? All roads really lead to custom metal work with these old trucks, unless I had a troopy, and even then it seems tough to get OEM parts... thanks for the reply...

cheers

Fj45 Roll Bar

I acquired this in-cab FJ45 roll bar from the PO who liked to have the top off of the pickup and use the regular FJ40 bikini top during extended nice weather. He did not have the headache rack. It came unattached so I put it on my other FJ45 to see how it fit. Looks like he had it made to exact measurements regarding cab height, width, length and the 3 stock mounting points on each side. It is 1 1/2 inches in diameter. I have a headache rack on mine and don't need it. Besides I like the top-on look, but only on Land Cruisers;))

I have a cage in mine. Makes getting the top off a bit harder as you have to lift straight up to clear the roll bar. I have a set up to the garage ceiling to lift. Mount is very similar to what Apache Pilot has.

you would be better off with nothing than that. You stand a good chance of getting stabbed in the side when that thing gets ripped off the B pillar. Best case it just folds down and doesn't get ya.

It's certainly not worthy of a good barrel roll, but it would hold as well as a factory 40 "roll bar" in a flop.

Neither are worth much more than a bikini mounting point and to get you to pass tech in parks that require a hoop.

45s are tough to get something in the cab with the filler neck in the way.

Cool, thx for replies... I'm thinking of a hoop outside of the cab in the bed where a headache rack would mount..., wonder if a bikini would stretch that far?
