Hi all,

With my FJ40 having all burnt up exhaust valves (see previous thread), I have just been told that the cause may have been uleaded fuel.

So, the question is if the 1981-1982 model F2 engine already had hardened valve seats for use with unleaded fuel?

Do I need to have the valve seats replaced on the head while I am at it?

They look fine compared to the valves but I am not sure where to from here.

Kind regards

In the US, yes. Don't know about the rest of the world.

Added: Having the valves adjusted too tight will result in burned valves also. Tight exhaust valves are quiet, but they do not have sufficient "closed" time to cool off. Slightly loose is better than slightly tight. You have to learn to appreciate the 2F valve clatter. :D

If the seats can be re-faced, then they will be fine, otherwise, if the vavles are hammered out, you may have damaged the seat beyond repair.

Your machinist will be able to show you and explain to you what is going to need replacing and why, far better than anyone out here.

Yep... What he said... Let your machinst explain it all to you.

All F/2F/3F engines have very hard seats. Even the early ones. They are all perfectly happy with unleaded. Absolutely not an issue with an '81-'81 vintage rig.

Thanks all!

I have to be careful here because it is extremely easy to overcapitalize this particular FJ40 of mine.

That is why I am trying to avoid the engineering shop on this one if I can.
I spoke to them and they want AU$280,- up front to service the head.

I don't want anything serviced, cleaned, flushed, sandblasted etc. When I said I want them to just look at the valve seats and give me an opinon, they maintained that this will still cost 280,-.

The seats look fine to me and there is no recession, pitting or anything on them. I purely wanted to know if they are suitable for unleaded fuel.

Now that this is verfied, I am going to put it together again with 6 new valves which I will grind in myself, by hand :-)

Kind regards
