Does anyone offer a complete bolt on exhaust system for a 78 FJ40?? I pretty much need from the manifold to the rear bumper. (including cat). Am I better off just going to a meineke?? I checked napa, checker, autozone... No luck on a complete system. :bang:

Personally, I would just go to a reputable muffler shop and have them fix you up. I'm sure there has to be a decent one that people recommend in the Phoenix area.

Yep, I agree, find a good shop... typically, the national chains don't have the personnel with the skills to do a good custom exhaust.
I recommend going to a good local shop and talking them through what you want to do, going so far as to get it on the lift with the guy who is going to do the work and walking through it. I also recommend having them build it with flanges in key places, like the cat and the muffler. The Magnaflow Hushpower muffler is low profile and has a good sound: quiet at speed, throuty on acceleration and burbbles like a V8 when decelerating. It is a little on the expensive side, but is stainless and will last a long time.
The other advantage to a local shop is that you can have your exhaust routed anyway you like. I had mine run inside the frame rail from the down pipe (I a have 1981 FJ40 with headers, but same difference) then across the tub from driver to passenger side in front of the rear shocks and then out the passenger side behind the rear wheel like stock. This gave me the room to put an air tank where the original muffler was.
HTH
Good luck

A 78 did not come with a cat. Unless you need to try and clean up for smog test, no need for it.

The California spec' 1978 FJ-40 was equiped with a thermal reactor which took the place/function of the exhaust manifold. They are extremely hard to find, and I have been told that there is an emissions exemption on these units.

Federal spec' did not come equiped with this set-up, so you should have more latitude.

I would find myself a nice header and go to a reputable exhaust shop.

thanks for the info. I have been finding conflicting info about the cat. I have read that the FJ40 first brought the cat. into the picture in 1979. However, the Arizona state emissions website says everything must have one from '76 and up, so I am not sure what to expect when I have to take it through.

Call them up and ask them to be sure. But most places don't require you to add components that were not OEM in the year manufactured. That's assuming the engine and smog equipment are still stock.

Disclaimer: I don't, nor have I ever, lived in Arizona.
