FJ40 - 8274 issue

Ladies and Gents,

I recently purchased a second hand 8274 for my 40. After reading some of the tech articles here, I decided it'd be a good move to rebuild her, and throw in a lower seal / brake kit ect. (first attempt at rebuilding a winch!)

First things first, the clutch release mech wouldnt pull out.. Looking at the pics you can see why rusted!!

Then ( i dont know how) I moved the winch around on the bench to remove the top cover and the brake pawl spring flew off, along with the protective cap. (you can see from the pics that the alloy cast 'rod' which appears to be a casted part of the lower housing assy, snapped off Now obviously I'd hate to see what a complete lower assy is worth to replace. From my little knowledge, it only looks as if this 'rod' simply retains the spring and has a bolt screwed into the top of it / has no excessive pressure placed upon it? As there is a considerable ammt of alloy at the base, could I tap a thread, place a long bolt with a sleve over it to retain the spring and place the cap back on?

8274 continued

Ive also attached a few pics of the motor. Can anyone tell me if this 'looks' a fair condition? As Im going to get the outer housing powder coated, can anyone recommend what type of paint I should use to paint the drum?

From thirty feet away, the armature and brushes look great.


Now how about a close up of them?


Make sure that the leads from the brushes are tight in the brush holder assembly. I had a screw back out somehow and burn up the connector on the brush lead, on the new Warn motor, just like what you have pictured here.

If your armature is not rusted, not gouged or showing signs of severe wear and there is nothing poking out between the "bars" of the comutator (copper looking thing where the brushes run) than you are fine. Field poles/shoes should not have wear marks. Looks like you have plenty of brush left just check what Poser recommended.
