Robb-thanks for the info. I thought it must have something to do with a vacuum pump and that explains everything. I wonder though why it would be part of the aleternator-that seems weird. Save a nice 6 cylinder diesel for me. I won't have to smog my truck forever.

hehe, if you had to choose a turning part to attach a vacuum pump (without adding another "thing") which would you choose? I think it was a good design for the parameters around the decision. Unfortunate about the cost of the alt (I got lucky and found 2 24V spares), but it was a cool way to keep things relatively simple.
There's nothing funnier than discovering the vacuum cannister under the driver's floorpan for the first time.
I did the same battery tray mount for the second battery with angle iron, its freaky how there just happenned to be threaded holes in the chassis not being used for anything that i could bolt it to.
Your work looks fully awsome, can you just pop over to my place and fix my heap?
Hey Rob
Nice work keep it up. What kind of turbo is that KKK ???? I 've been reading alot of turbo related posts. What do you like? Besides the AXT kit.

Why a boost gauge with a vacuum readout?

That turbo/vacuum gauge is meant for a turbocharged gas engine where there is still vacuum created while decellerating, coasting, etc. Autometer makes a boost only guage, but not in the Ultra Lite series you are using. Look at part number 5404:
