I'm thinking about attending this. Has anyone else in the club gone to this? Anybody else interested in going? I was considering seeing if I could get a spot at the 4J+1+1 that seems to be popular with the club runs out of Ouray.

FJ Summit

I left a message for the folks at 4J. It looks like there are plenty of RV/Tent sites available at the Ridgeway SP about 15 miles away. The Amphitheater FS campground looks pretty full already.

I went two years ago. There is some beautiful scenery in the San Juans for sure. Most of the trails are mild, albeit at high altitude with some narrow shelf roads and steep drop-offs. There are a few more challenging trails too (Poughkeepsie Gulch was fun).

The biggest disadvantage to the FJC Summit is just the sheer number of folks attending. Pretty much overwhelms every restaurant, motel, campground, etc. in Ouray, and the trail groups get large and crowded between different groups leaving at different times. But it is fairly well organized, and having an experienced guide was nice when I did Poughkeepsie Gulch for example. But most of the time, I just ended up going by myself, to get away from the crowds. All the well-known easier trails are well-marked by signs. Next time I go back, I'll probably just go on my own or with a small group, and try to schedule it away from any big events the Summit. JMO, YMMV.

Is anybody making plans for a HDC Ouray trip? Ali?

Oh heck ya, it's been my family's annual trip since 2004. You betcha, we're planning on going this year and staying at 4J+J+J campground.

Do you have dates figured out yet and is the club invited?

I backup 1911... I went in 2011, but had more fun with my buddies last year. FJ Summit is just a bit too busy for my liking.

Ali,
Interested in family camping trip... having baby #5 in July, so might not work, but end of August would be great. :-)

The more the merrier I say. I'll post something up for Ouray trip on a separate thread.

Blaine,

It''s a good time. Will you be keeping your FJC?

July or early August would be a good time for me. We are planning a 2-week trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton for mid-September after the crowds die down a bit but before most of the campgrounds close.

I am working on getting 'Fish to host a Colorado multi-day this summer. Jeff in Texas is interested in a Colorado trip. He was on the Ouray trip 2 years ago and did the FJ summit last year. He said it was fun but the HDC trip was more like what he wants to do this year.

Now THAT sounds really good. Keep us posted...

Danise and the kids were really stoked about going to the FJ Summit (even with the details you guys provided). I'm indifferent at this point so we are signed up. We'll be staying at 4J. Trails we are going to run are California Pass/Corkscrew Gulch, Alpine Loop, Imogene to Ophir. I've been on Blackbear/Imogene before so I thought I'd try something different this time.

Here's what the Animas Forks (outside Silverton/Eureka) area looked like 2 days ago. Ran some crazy climbs up in California Gulch.

Looks like fun, Graham!

We could use some of that snow - OK, we could use all of that snow.

Beautiful!
