Doesn't the FJ's adaptive AT basically work as a hill decent control?

Meaning it downshifts the engine to maintain a low speed.

Not sure if I am way off here, that is just how it was explained to me.
Torque converter does not work backwards - so engine braking wit AT is limited. But that's what real brakes are for, right?

P.S. I just wish one could drop Atlas II transfer into yota...

There is a guy on here now that's posting 200k miles with no problems on his 98. 98 was a first year for a major change in land cruisers.

Also, isn't the FJ Cruiser based upon the Prado chassis? One would think the FJ Cruiser would be sharing a lot with the 4Runner and the GX470, which have been out a few years now.

Of course I haven't studied these models in depth, I'm only making assumptions.

Well... hmm... let me think this over.....

FJCRUISER=Reliability+CoolnessFactor+Doesnt need a "TrailRated" badge.

Xterra= AMC Pacer of the 21st Century;p

But really... I remember the wife wanted an Xterra around 2002. I was kinda ok with it ... until I started talking with hardcore Xterra owners that wheel, camp, out door types... I asked about roll overs.... one of the owners works as an insurance adjuster... he gave me a website that shows thousands of vehicles that have been wrecked... All the Xterra's that rolled had the roofs crushed flat. I showed my wife the photo's and she changed her mind. Im sure they have changed that... hopefully

2005 is significantly improved. Entirely different car.

I doubt that FJ is much stronger in a rollover. Nothing short of a roll cage will improve things much. That said - do not roll over and wear your seat belt.

I would pick FJ over X - but your FUD is slighlty misplaced in this discussion, I think.

However, my sister's '06 Avalon - American designed, American built - just spent a week in the shop because of a flaw in the AC system (and the flaw was a design screw up) - so there's that…

American designed, American built.....

I would also consider '07 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon if you really want all-out off-road capability. Room inside is kinda tight though.

HAH wow i forgot i even made this thread here... lol guess my decision is obvious

;)

lol btw for those taht were wondering, FJc is 100% japanese built and runs on the 4.0l form the 4runner and suspension of the land cruiser.

I know where you coming from.

The Xterra platform, has its limitations, just like a SRT4 (FWD).

The FJC platform.... better platform, going to last forever, and as for modifications are concerned, there is a lot more you can do to it. From the factory, it comes pretty capable (Rear Locker, ATRAC, etc).

If you go to the trails, I can gaurntee you that you are going to see a lot more FJC's out there compared to the Xterra.

Also worth noting that the only way to get a rear locker on a new Xterra is to get the "offroad" trim. Not package, trim.

FJTex, what Land Cruiser suspension is the FJC running on?? Surely you don't mean the 100 series.

I personally feel that you get a great vehicle either way you go. The new X's have a great engine and tranny, available locker and traction control that work together, and very similar approach, departure, breakover angles compared to the FJC. What I don't like about the X is the dial to engage 4wd and I wish they would go to a coil spring in the rear.

Obviously the FJC has a great drivetrain setup and it is easy to get the ATRAC to work with the rear locker. I think the FJC has an advantage from an offroading perspective and it has more aftermarket support. What I don't like about the FJC is the view from the driver seat (that is just my opinion), and the door configuration.

Drive both and pick which one you like best.
