I know I have seen this posted but can't find it after searching.
My head unit is toast, I think. I would like to replace it with a double DIN unit like a Pioneer AVH-270BT DVD Receiver. Crutchfields says it won't fit and I need a single DIN unit and a spacer.
It sure looks like it will fit.
Any thoughts?

I got lucky with a neighbor selling a Jensen double din unit for cheap a few years ago, but I highly recommend going with a double din DVD/NAV type unit. Can't comment on other units, but mine dropped in like a glove and fit the factory brackets and bezel like it was supposed to be there (no spacer). I surprised my wife the other day (although it's been in the truck for a couple of years, and I showed her previously..) of just how 'modern' the 62 was, when I pulled up the NAV screen with us sitting in the driveway, and told her I can even play DVD's while driving (I know it's verboten..). It's a touch screen so it even feels modern, and the backup camera when you shift into reverse is really cool. The $20 ebay camera I mounted in the rear bumper is really not bad compared with my wife's new honda. The unit I got is a Jensen 9424, and it's a few years old, but maybe you can take a look at the specs and find something of similar dimensions. I wouldn't go any deeper, it was pretty close in the back, but nothing bad. It will make your old 62 feel cool and new..

I cannot imagine a Double DIN not fitting, but some have trimmed the dash face ever so slightly. The OEM unit is double DIN in overall size, and I don't recall depth being an issue. I run a Toyota AM/FM/Cass. and a single DIN CD player below it - fills both slots. No fitment issues. You could look for a later, plug-compatible Toyota unit, unless you want a video screen or USB/Bluetooth stuff that is more advanced.

It's a pretty big hole! I'd say buy and make it work.

The 62 is super easy to replace the radio. Reuse the side brackets and anything double DIN standard will bolt right into the existing dash mounts. A standard older Toyota adapter pigtail will connect the old wiring to your new radio's wires in a matter of minutes. And the dash fascia will fit around most newer units without needing to trim. You won't need the new unit's bezel. It truly is a modern bolt in upgrade.

A 60 radio install is a pain.

The FJ62 is a double din, but I had some trouble with a DVD/Nav unit. In order to insert a DVD or update the maps the screen needed to tilt and extend. This caused some problems due to the screen hitting the top of the console bezel. I tired to mess with it by adjusting the brackets and mounting hardware to no end, so I just installed a single din radio instead.

It was an old Alpine W200, so perhaps the newer double din Navs work differently. Just a warning.

Thanks for all the comments, experience and opinions. I think I will get the double DIN and see how it goes. Can't imagine it won't fit but the comments on the tilt and angle are noted and concerning. I'll post on progress when I eventually get to it.

I put a tilting DVD/nav in my old 62 and it fit fine with no bezel interference. The only way to find out is to try it. :)

Do you recall which one you used?

The biggest issue I found is the size of the opening and the need to shim the unit with brackets out to the edge. I was able to do that with a few washers- hardest part is getting them in place, and the screws, and the bracket in place that deep in the dash. A lot of external trim rings and motorized tilting might be difficult. I did a single-din setup, with a Metra Toyota pocket below, both mounted easily to the OEM bracket, just had to tilt the bottom out a bit to fit flush to the dashboard. I like the single din because that is the only way to remove the faceplate for security (living in the city). I did a Pioneer with a USB input on the back, and ran an extension to the inside of the pocket so that I can plug in my phone. Pretty low profile with no faceplate. THe Pioneer also has a semi-vintage look with an actual knob and buttons. Less than $150 all in. Well, plus the small under-seat powered bass thingy. That was extra, but well worth the effort.

Did you ever get one? These is a demo model for sale for half price and I'm wondering if I should jump on it?

I installed a pioneer NEX4100 7" double din right when I got my 62 and the original brackets held it perfect, the only modification I needed was to slightly file the dash opening a bit to accomodate the screen opening and closing. Now my 1988 62 has Apple carplay and streams netflix with multiple usb inputs located in the glove and center to charge phones. Well worth the change!

Put the USB/aux input into the dash and the extra USB input flush mounted into the glove box for the wife to use.

Yes, I did it. I'll try to post pics tomorrow. I know have a double DIN with hands free cellular bluetooth and bluetooth audio. It's sweet.

Hello. Just got a 62 that needs new headunit. Saw several of your post saying it’s easy, the only thing I cannot find it getting the old one out. Don’t want to take off the dash cap if I don’t need to. Thoughts?

Here is another ancient thread to walk you through how to swap the unit out.
