Can it be for real? Saw FJ 62 on E-bay with 5spd trans.Seems like that would be an awesome set up

use the search tool my young padewan learner. it has been done.

the rest of the world had the option for the manual trans. everything sold in the USA after late 87 has had an automatic in it.........

swap

I am thinking of doing the same swap. I have 33"x9.5 x15 BFG AT KO's, and now my auto has a hard time pulling 10,000 foot passes.
Do you run bigger tires than stock? What gearing do you run? What kind of power do you feel compared to the automatic before? Mileage estimate? Thanks!

Not sure who you're asking but I'll chime in. I run 33x12.5 and the hills have always been frustrating with the A440F, 35-40mph. Stock gearing with the H55F is fine, nice really because now I can control the rpm's and run over something like Vail Pass at 50 or so w/o any issues at all. The difference on the passes is significant as is the difference off road. This tranny has nice low gearing for 1st & 2nd which is real nice, better than I had imagined. 5th on the highway is nice, 55-65 somewhere around 2600-2700rpms. Living in Silverton you'd benefit from it for certain.

MPG? Improved 2-3 mpg better than before as far as I've determined. My swap was forced by burning up the auto when by Grand Junction returning from Moab. Due to circumstances I had Safari Ltd in Junction do the swap for me, very expensive but money well spent. IIRC Hugh lived in Silverton before moving to Junction.

I say go for it, the 62 is a great truck and when you get the control through the 5 speed it's a really great truck!

tranny swap

Thanks! I am gonna drop it off at Proffit's Cruisers in Delta soon for a lift, H55 trans. swap, paint, maybe more...
I do okay now but want much more options later and this will help all the way around I think. Do you kinow where yours came from, and if it's stock? How does everything look under the hood and dash? Proffit

That's a nice looking 62. Champaigne is the best color. I wanted to add a 5-speed to mine, but sold it and got the 80 instead. Now, if you added steelies to it and 33's...?:beer:Ned

I'm the second owner, the H55F was installed by Safari Ltd in Grand Junction: Safari Ltd. - Home who I highly recommend.

Everything looks stock under the hood and dash, the only thing different is the relocation of the shift.

taking the rig to proffit's is a great choice; they are excellent to deal with and their work speaks for itself.

as far as the conversion goes, after test driving the one i did last year i was happy with the results. power seemed better and i bet the fuel economy went up.

the t-case shifter reloaction is very simple; remove the fj62 tunnel cover and install a late fj60 cover. direct bolt in, no mods needed.............

I tried calling Safari 4 times in the past, plus email, with no response; which made me wonder what if I had a problem, would they still be so hard , or harder to get ahold of...

I am sure i will be glad with Jeremiah Proffit doing the work.

I never had any trouble at all getting hold of them, getting a quick reply to messages by phone or email. They do shut down for events, maybe bad timing, who knows.

Go with whoever you think would be best for you, I just encourage you to get a firm delivery date.

I am looking for leads on where to get the H55F from? Used, rebuilt, any suggestions. I see Specter, Man a Fre, has 'em.

Here is what I would like you to do. Contact SOR and Man-a Fre, get their price and availability with shipping. Then contact CruiserDan here at MUD. See if he can help you out. I know he has been able to get them in the past.
