Hi All,

I recently purchased a fairly clean 95’ HZJ78 Prado SX. I am extremely excited to own one of these.

Naturally I am a little nervous dailying a 30 year old truck. Thankfully the owner was prudent enough to do some preventative maintenance, which I will list below:

Work done before purchase (~120k mi)
  • Maintenance within the last 3k miles:
  • Full timing belt service
  • Water pump
  • Glow plugs
  • Valve cover gasket
  • ALL new filters and fluids
  • ALL new rotors and pads
  • Front knuckle rebuild
  • Tie rod ends
  • Two new batteries
  • Upgraded aluminum radiator
  • 76C thermostat upgrade
  • 10 blade fan upgrade
  • EGR delete
  • KRAE 3inch DP to full 3 inch exhaust
  • SAAS dual gages (boost and water temp)
  • (EGT and trans temp not installed yet)
  • KRAE air box

What maintenance projects should I add to the laundry list to help ensure longevity and reliability? I’d also love to hear general thoughts, comments, and suggestions or advice y’all have to offer. I’ll be sure to add some images of the ute to the post.

Thanks in advance!

Looks really nice and well kept., I’m sure you will love it…welcome to the madness 😀

Welcome! Looks like a nice rig with excellent preventative maintenance already. I would highly recommend installing a pre-turbo pyrometer, and then get driving! In all honesty these make pretty good daily drivers, though with a 30 year old vehicle expect to have to take the vehicle off the road every once in a while to do some repairs. Parts are generally pretty easy to get, but are not usually immediately available locally so there may be downtime while waiting for stuff to arrive. Fortunately I have found that most wear items give ample warning to an attentive driver, giving plenty of time to order parts before complete failure.

I have daily driven my engine swapped Prado pretty consistently for the past 3 years and 30k miles and love it. Almost every instance of major part failure (something that required me to take it out of service immediately) has been something related to the engine swap and related modifications. The running gear has been very solid.

What engine did you swap into it? Another 1KZ-TE?

Enjoy your new truck and I would say drive it like you stole it help figure out what it needs.

Our KZJ78 is daily driven and I think you got just about everything listed we have done to ours in the last 6 months of ownership. Below is the extra stuff we did to ours. To be clear none of it was a must, but more service I wanted done if the truck is supposed to be called on for daily use.

All suspension bushings. Including sway bars.
All coolant and soft heater hoses. We had some seepage at the heater valve.
Coolant flush.
Shocks and coils.
Rear door hinges and rubber bumpers.
Rebuilt alternator

Service I am planning on in the next year. Yes most of this is pre-cautionary but I would rather schedule having a truck down for service rather than need to react to a problem.
Install a new fuel filter housing/primer. I've read of enough people loosing prime
Rebuilt Starter
Rebuilt Injectors
Rebuilt IP pump
Replace as many hoses as possible.
Replace ignition switch
Valve Adjustment
Rear main seal.
Gauges

I appreciate the insight!

I actually just drove the land cruiser ~340km and the thermals did really well, albeit I was babying the rig and keeping the revs as low as possible, hogging the right lane.

Do you have any information on the 10 blade fan upgrade? I have seen it mentioned several times, but not a lot of detail on it. My search skills may be off, but I haven't seen a part number mentioned to it.

Sorry for the extremely late reply, this Youtube link might help you out…
