Finally was able to pick on up that looks great. 1991, 160k, one PO, maintenance has been kept up very nicely so I am looking forward to a long future with this thing. There are a couple of issues I have to address to make it like I want it.

1. First, the speakers are shot. I have to search and figure out exactly what the best speakers to get will be.

2. I need a new headunit since the stock one wont play burned CDs and I want to also install XM. Any recommendations? I am not an audiophile but I prefer to have a setup that sounds nice without spending a ton.

3. Where the hell are the armrests on the seats

4. What is recommended as far as oil additives? Anything? Nothing?

Thanks guys. Looking forward to getting to know everyone here.

Let me be the first to say :flipoff2:
thats the official mud welcome.

on the head unit I havent a clue, the speakers it kind of depends on wether you have issues cutting holes in the door panels to fit larger ones. I dont and have 5 1/4" sonys on the front and 6 1/4" sonys on the rear doors, rear doors took some cutting (started by the prior owner) to fit in ok.

the armrests are on the desing room floor

as to aditives to the oil I dont use any, Cary on the board is the resident oil guru and there is a very long post in the FAQ's you can go through.

:flipoff2: Welcome

Don't you have a center console? Thats were you put one arm, the other is suppose to be on the wheel :D

Cary says no to oil additives. Quality oils have all that already.

Take your old speakers out and see what size and then compare. Your head unit will make a lot more difference than the speackers. I have crappy speakers in my FJ40, but when I put a nice Pioneer deck in there, it made a big difference.

When I shopped around, I wanted one that plays MP3's (10 hours of Music on 1 CD) and decided on a Pioneer for Quality and sound.

Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome.

By the speakers being shot I mean really bad. Blown.

On mine the center console is roughly the same height as the seat cushion so it would really uncomforable to try and rest on it.

Right now I am making a weekend list of things i need to do....or atleast should do. I am going to go through and change any fluid imaginable. Are there any good checklists of things that should be done to new rigs?

For speakers, use the search function here and use the word Eclipse. They sound great and allow you to maintain a factory look, if that is what you are after. One of the best threads is in the FAQ section of the 80s forum.

Ditto your feelings on the armrests. I have port-installed leather, and they didn't put leather padded consoles on those.

Can't help you with the factory head unit, mine still works.

And, welcome ! :flipoff2:

Welcome Brian ..

A few months back I installed Infinity 6.5's in the front doors .. quite a nice upgrade . Not sure why I waited 3 years !

Man...those infinitys look good.

I just bought a set of the Eclipses on Ebay. 110 for front and back.

I am a complete jackass when it comes to working with stereo equipment so hopefully the install will go smooth.

The 80 series is really easy to work on. Since you want to go XM I'd go with a Sony headunit. I like the Sony headunits with the flip down face without a motor (mechanical). They are reasonablely priced and I've got good service out of them. The 5000 I have in the 91 was previously installed in my 85 FJ60. I think it is 4 years old. Several trips to dusty Moab, and lots of local dusty wheeling and it still works great. Pioneers also seem to last in the dirt pretty well. I had really poor luck with my Alpines. I went through like 4 in 6 months. Great luck in cars, but in the Cruiser the dust shield didn't seal to keep the dirt out. I run the Infinity 6.5" reference series in the front of my 91 I use the Infinity Grills and used a Metra harness to convert the Sony wiring to the factory Toyota wiring. The universal Japanese Metra kit or generic Toyota Metra kit will add a pocket below the new headunit. These are available almost anywhere. Even Walmart!

Welcome :flipoff2:
I hope you are enjoying the fj80.
These things are tanks.
The only dislike I have is the fact
of no power in the straight six motor
Should keep down on the speeding
tickets though :D
I just bought a 92 w/135k miles for 5900.00.
Feel like I got a pretty good deal
Just wondering about how much you
gave for the 91?
As far as stereos go Ive had good luck with
pioneer :)

If you are thinking of XM or Sirius I would consider a head unit that is Sat ready. If you don't get the Sat now you can add it later. All you have to do then is purchase the receiver and antena and plug it in to your head unit. JMHO

Welcome aboard :flipoff2:

Just as a side note...Romer -- the center console on the LX is taller than the ones on the LCs -- the earlier models (91/92 FJs) are even shorter.

One more bennie of the LX...that and the panties, of course :D

I paid 5500 for mine. Brand new tires, brakes, plugs, air filter, cap...plugs...distrubuter, and starter. Hopefully mine will turn out to be a good deal as well.

Doug.... whats up with the LX panties thing?? Am I missing something here? :flipoff2:
Don't know about the panties? You might want to take this up with Lexus. You should've received your pair when you bought your rig since you're the original owner...

Search "panties" and posts by myself to get a start...
