As you may know from my previous BFG v Revo post I have been an BFG guy, up till now. I had the 285/75/16 A/T Revo's put on the 80 last Tuesday. Here are my impressions:

It has been raining almost non stop since Tue. The Revo show no sign of hydroplaning. They track perfect when you hit a puddle at speed, very reassuring. Rate 9/10 and I would put the BFG's @ 8/10.

Road noise is not bad. Both the Revo and the BFGs get a 8/10.

Nice and firm with very good feedback and little noticable shoulder roll. Revo 9/10, BFG 8/10.

I took the truck on a muddy elk hunt this am. Traction in the very slick clay/slime/mud was good. Locked up I was able to climb some steep stuff that I thought I wouldn't make it up. I drove my other truck with new BFG A/T's on the same roads two days ago. There is a noticable difference. The Revo's side slipped less than the BFG's. They also clean out much faster. With the BFG's I leave a trail of mud a half mile long when I get back on the pavement. The Revo's left @ 30 yards.

So my first impression is a good one. I only have 300 miles on the new skins so time will tell if I change my mind. My main concern is sidewall puncture resistance. I have popped 3 of the original Desert Duelers, hopefully these will prove more durable.

The bad news is this size tire won't fit on the spare tire hanger with the hitch installed. For now I have the original spare still mounted. Next I need to figure out how to carry a full sized spare without spending big $.

Thanks to all for the input on these tires.

As I said, I love mine, but I did not know about, but glad you told me, that the 285s won't fit up under there. Diameter issue or width?

Damn, I guess I can go out and buy #5, and then plead with the wifey we need a rear tire carrier/bumper!!

The issue is diameter. The stock LTX is touching the hitch and the 285 was a no way fit.

Fly Rod,

Do you have a non-OEM hitch? I fitted 285 Revo's on my old 80 w/o clearance problems on the spare. Are you saying there is no clearance between the tire and the panhard rod? You couldn't just push the tire back with your foot while cranking the tire up?

The hitches are port/dealer installed, they used several different manufactures, some have more clearance than others.

My hitch is an after market one. It is not "svelt" by any meens. I will try to push and shove one in place when I do the brakes after the first. The guys at the tire shop said they tried that but it was a no go.

I'll let you know if it works.

Where'd ya get 'em?

Expert Tire by Sears. Tell Jeff Steve Eadie sent you. They have put tires on three of my vehicles now and have alway done a good job. Very competative pricing.

Fly Rod - agree with Hoser. My 285 Revo's fit with the Toyota aftermarket hitch mfg by Valley Industries that I had.

Bingo! Same setup here.

I've had no issues with rain either. In fact it's raining now - I'm dreaming of a rainy Christmas...

We have had freezing rain this week in Missoula and I have continued to be impressed by just how great my Revo's perform. I was "Cruise'n" around town with a 99 4-RUNNER and a 2003 4X4 Chevy with other tires and they were sliding all over the place while I could hardly sense any sliding. Two Thumbs up!:flipoff2:

Glad you like your Revos, I love mine and I too liked BFG's for over ten years. I would have ranked slightly stronger for the Revo.

For sound the Revo is much better than any BFG I had, although my last set of BFG KO's were better than the regular BFG AT's, but still, if the Revo is 8/10 the BFG's are 6/10 compared to other AT tires.

For traction the Revo simply stomps the BFG on almost all surfaces. I think the street performance is awesome. Performance in mud and snow is great. Performance in sand is great. Performance on rocks is good but I worry with sidewall punctures much more than the BFG - on one of the first times I went wheeling with my Revos, I slashed a sidewall (I'm pretty positive the BFG's would not have slashed) - and I also worry with tire pressures much more than the BFG - it seems that anything below about 18 to 20 psi makes the tire want to wrinkle pretty profoundly (I'm used to running my BFG's down to 12 without wrinkling anywhere as much). I've got almost eight thousand miles on my Revos now and the more I run them the more I like them.

Ohh, my 285 fits just fine with my hitch, not that that matters much anyway cause I'm soon to switch my stock bumper and hitch for a Slee rear bumper!!!

I have had Revos for about 6k miles and have NO complaints at all. Performance off road for me was outstanding, but I have not had BFGs.

REVO's are awesome. Currently running 3 sets on a 94 cruiser, 96 lifted cherokee and a 03 tundra stock. Quiet and snow and wet perfomance are outstanding. I am currently running Cooper S/Ts on cherokee because it is winter....actually the REVOs are better in the snow. BFG's are made by Michelin. Michelins are made in France. France is not known for quality autos and/or access. The stock Michelins sucked. At everything. Mushy. Check! No traction. Check! Pansy tread. Check! Expensive. check! They weren't even quiet. The Revos are the tire.

using a DrawTite hitch. Plenty of space left with a 285.

Check if it's the receiver tube that extends inward. That one may be cut shorter very likely.

I had a Valley hitch when I had 285 revos and the spare fit no problem. Try pushing it toward the front of the vehicle when you crank it up.
Cheers,
Sean

Revo's

Well I now have approx 10K on my Revos. Just got back last night from a trip to Kansas. Went thru torrential rains last night on the interstate at 70+ mph and no hydroplanning at all. These are THE tires for my Cruiser.

FlyRod: Any pictures? Do you have stock suspension? I am going to purchase tires in a week and am torn between going with a bigger stock Michelin or trying Revos. I am also going to replace the shocks with Bilsteins.

Any other impressions from making the move from Michelins to Revos? I think the stock shocks and my worn Michelins are contributing to a ride that is not absorbing the bumps very well. I want a better tire and am wondering if going to the 285's will contribute to a stiffer ride and take me in the opposite direction of making the ride more comfortable.

Revos

I think you will find the Revos will have a somewhat harder ride than the M's.
But the off road capability will outway that. I also think your on the right track with the Bilstein shocks. My 80 had 130K miles on it and I replaced the OEM shocks with OEM and didn't not have good results. I put Bilsteins on my 4-Runner and the ride improved 300% over Monroe. My next move will be to put Bilsteins on the 80.

I've got 30k miles on my Revo's since last November when I bought them. I've been VERY pleased with them. I admittedly drive my cruiser very hard, almost as if it were a sports car, and the tires show this the most. At 30k miles they have about 30-40% tread left. I think I'll get another 10k out of them and then they'll be dead. On my previous truck, if a tire lasted 20k miles it was doing really well! I could kill a set of BFGs ATs in 20k miles, and that was on a truck that weighed 2k lbs less.

These tires are the ultimate tire for a stockish 80 IMO. With them and lockers I have not yet been rejected from any line or obstacle I have attempted. And ask anyone who wheels with me, I don't try the stupid easy stuff either ;)
