yep, it doesn't sound like the typical problem but it sounds somewhat related.

there is a post at Pirate on how to fix, including pics from KLF, but I'll be damned if I can find it and it was me who started the thread.

LP,

Are you refering to the electronic glitch in the dash (ground problem) which affects two guages at the same time ???

Well, if you boys can dig it up, I'd appreciate it! I'm printing off that e-FSM I downloaded now.

Ugh- turns out it was the radiator. I took it to a local shop and found the corner near the upper radiator hose had rotted out.

I still haven't dug into the electronics about the fuel gauge. I have the FSM printed out, but am just waiting to find time to adress it.

$190 for the new radiator, plus install and fill.

At least I can take it wheelining this weekend.

Just wanted to add my $.2. I use distilled water when I replace my coolant with 50/50 mix of green stuff. It depends on where you live, but some areas the tap water is very hard with a lot of minerals. These minerals overtime seem to buildup in your system.I think it is worth the $3 for a couple of gallons of distilled water that is going to be in your cruiser for awhile.

Goodluck

Well, I found the info on dressing the contacts in the voltage regulator for the temp and fuel gauges but the link doesn't work. If you want me to fax you a copy PM me. It was on the yankeetoys.org site FWIW.

Thanks for the info Ming- turns out that wasn't the problem, but I appreciate you sending me that stuff anyway.

Ok. I spent last night trying to tackle the non-functioning gas gauge issue. I tested the fuel level sending unit per FSM spec. It was good. Tested the fuel gauge per FSM spec- at the wires on top of the FLSU it showed a dead gauge. On the contacts on the back of the gauge it showed a good gauge. Apparently the wire going from the FLSU to the dash gauge was shot. It looked intact throughout it's entire run, but I guess there was some corrosion someplace or something.. anyway, I ran a new wire from the top of the FLSU to the dash gauges...

It works now! I was so frickin' excited to have a functioning gas gauge now! WOOHOO!

Oh, and the radiator was rotten I saw it at the shop after the new one got installed. The fins were so bad that they literally crumbled when you touched them up in the corner where the leak was.

on the aftermarket sunpro temp guages whats the corect temps for the guage to read on the highway in summertime?
winter time i was reading like 185 to 205. other day i got to 250 in 90 something temps outside?

depends on the thermostat you have installed, 250 is prob getting on the warm side, i think my .02 and way

Affordable electric gauges are inaccurate. That's why most auto manufacturers don't put numbers on theirs.

Radio trash sells a cheap infrared thermometer - range is up to 500F IIRC (too low to check a catalytic converter).

Oh, and if your running too lean on the freeway, that can cause you to overheat, too.
But you'd feel that, cause you'd prolly have lean misfires and pinging/bucking.

Is your cold air intake intact? Pulling intake air from behind the headlight is much denser
and cooler than pulling it from above the manifolds.

anyone know where i can find a new intake hose my LC
came w/out one.

hi im new but i did have an issue with my fuel guage pegging up to wa past full then temp go's all the way up to top (In red). there is a resistor built into fuel guage. they do shair same ground, but when the restort in "fuel guage" go'd out you will get erratic readings. www.sor.com has A LOT of cruiser parts.

Are you refering to the electronic glitch in the dash (ground problem) which affects two guages at the same time ???

i have question? what temp is ok? my 1988 FJ62 /w/ 196,000 miles is not overheating, but it's a lot hotter than when i bought it last year. b4 it would olny go up a 1/4 on guage (2'nd little line) now it's 2 lines away from red. but actual temp is 195 to 200. if my truck is shut off for about 5 min, then key to #2 guage is small amount away from red. is my sending unit going bad?

Take a look into this thread https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=177446&highlight=fuel+gauge

The superheating effect you observe after you shut the engine off is normal--at least mine does this and it makes some physical sense. When the engine is running, removing heat is a dynamic process. Hot-hot combustion gases transfer heat through hot cylinder walls into the coolant which transfers the heat to the radiator to be expelled. When you turn the engine off, the residual heat in the engine continues to conduct into the coolant, but since the coolant is stagnant, it's temperature increases. Once you restart the engine the temperature should drop quickly back to normal.

The OEM temperature gauge is known for being inaccurate. This could account for the change in temperature over the years. If you know the real temperature and it is OK, don't worry about it.
