How Much$$$$$$??:hhmm:

Update: there is one thing I would change if I were to build it over, the pin latch that locks the swing away tire carrier open should be a heavier design.

Follow up: I was able to locate through Rutland tool (like Slee hinted at) a Stainless Steel pin set up. This is a stronger pin that wont bend as easily. The handle/latch is also designed differently :)

Ive noticed that the times that when the pin has bent, it has been when other people (car wash, wife, etc) open the carrier and dont understand the latch and muscle it around while it's latched . The original design had the pin constantly under load to latch when it came to the matching hole. This new pin allows the handle to be positioned where you can hold the pin up (so it wont latch) buy swinging it to the side (see second pic) or set in the slot to automatically latch upon opening by constantly pushing the pin against the surface of the bumper. Good option in my opinion. Hope this info helps anyone else's build.

Pic is new style on left, the old on right. Also, the new pin in the carrier with the handle set not to automatically latch when meeting up with the hole.

Murf I just saw this option on another board, talk about heavy duty ...When you open the carrier you can Lock it at any position and drive around with it open if you want.

Holy ! Wow, that would solve everything. That is a cool :wrench: set up

Where can i buy this at?

I'm having trouble getting a hold of some of those steel plungers that I see all you guys in the states with.

I tried to source it from a local place in Oz but no luck.

This is what I'm talking about:

Anyone know how I'd be able to get a couple of these shipped from the US?

This is the link to the fixture works site product page:

Apologies for jumping in on the thread.....

They ship internationally. Problem I see is they have a $75 min.

Murf:

nice job on the bumper (and on that amazing wax job too)

but watcha gonna do when you decide you want bigger tires?

So nobody knows where to get locking spindle from?

Ive found that if you take care of the paint on a Toyota (and the PO did before you too), the pinstriping will almost always buff right out. I'm afraid Ill end up buffing the paint off one day :hillbilly:

Since I currently have minimal spacing to barely fit in my garage, I will end up staying with the 35's. 37's look better but Im happy with the 35's. BTW, the bumper builder said he can easily cut and reweld a different hoop if I ever change my mind for a larger tire.

Thanks

The story continues…..
I just dropped my 80 off with Tommy to get a bumper built. Almost the same specs as Murf, but I added a second swing out with a ladder/basket. He also has come with a solution for using his tire carrier with different sized tires. I will post pictures next week.

Interestingly, I’m the first one to order a bumper sense Murf. He expects to get the bumper completed, sent out for powder coating, and returned to me in under 10 days.:bounce:

If the quality of his work matches what he did for Murf, I can see a front bumper and sliders coming from his shop!

Cost? I’m cheap. If you are in Phoenix and want a bumper, you need to call Tommy.

Pete

You could try McMaster-Carr perhaps.

Where did they get that heavy duty spindle from?

Made it, it's a spare front axle spindle, stub shaft and locking hub. They use stock wheel bearings, seal and a custom or machined stock hub. If you search the '40 forum, some over there have done it, a bunch on Pirate, etc.

That is awesome. Does the tire carrier cradle allow for a larger tire if you choose to up size? Seems like your limited to 35's now.

ERG80

Well here we are two years later and Ive decided to move up a size from 315/70R17 to a 325/70R17 which is taller and quite a bit wider. I knew that the new tire would not fit in the cradle (and didnt) so out came the sawzall :hillbilly:!

Being that the rear cradle angled up, I measured where I could cut off the rear part of the hoop and leave part of the arms intact where they can still support the tire and allow it to sit down to where the wheel lined up properly to the center mount.

I touched up the metal area where cut and plugged off the ends of the tubes.

It fits well and without the bottom being pushed in has decided to have a more distinct rake to it (top leaning in) which Ive decided I like better.

Still one of the best bumpers Ive seen on mud.
Looks like a semi easy fix to get the tire to fit. Personally I like the tire leaning look better too.

I ended up changing the look of the cut off tubes by spot weldin on some freeze plgs on the end of the posts, grinding smooth, and painting. It looks more finished and will keep water/mud/etc out from getting into the carrier assembly.
