Finally running, but only when choked

I finally got the old beast fired up and running without starter fluid. But the problem now is that it won't run unless the choke is out. It doesn't have to be out much--just a little bit--but if you shove it completely in, it dies on a dime. It doesn't even sputter and then die, it shuts down immediately as soon as you disengage the choke.

Thoughts?

Think vacuum leak.

This happened to me on one of my 60's, it was the fuel pump. It ran great, but when I came to stop it would stall. Then I had one that did that until it really got warmed up, that was an intake leak.
Hope this helps.

How do you tell if the idle screw is adjusted properly?

You mentioned a possible problem with linkage. Anything in particular to look for?

I'll look hard for vacuum leaks.

Thanks guys!

If you look down the throat of the carb, the throttle plate should be slightly opened. You could run the screw all the way down to open that up and raise the idle, see if it'll keep running, and if it does, back the screw out until you get to the right RPM (650)

As far as the linkage, make sure it's connected right (if you do it backwards, it'll freak things out...been there, done that) and make sure it moves freely without binding, etc.

Same Problem

This happened to me last year (1984 FJ60). Needed the manifold resurfaced and new gasket. Worked like a charm after that.

This is what I'd lean toward. I had the exact thing happening to me & this was the problem too....

while its running spray carb cleaner around the base of carb / intake etc. if the engine reves up you have found your leak. (don't use starter fluid for this).

Your mixture screw is at the base of the carb on the side towards valve cover. I think its suppose to be screwed in all the way (just touching, you dont want to damage mixture screw) and then unscrewed 3-4 turns? (dont remember) and tuned to get highest vacume while keeping idle screw adjusted to proper setting.
