Hey guys! After several years of lurking around the forum I finally decided it was time to join. I've got a 2000 4runner that's been my DD for the past 10 years. I bought it bone stock and have turned it into a pretty capable expedition rig, really enjoying the process and spending a fair amount of time on the 4runner forums learning from all those guys. I'm from eastern NC but have been in Chapel Hill for the last 9 years for college, grad school, and some work in between. I'm a pretty big fan of all things Toyota, and over the last year or so have been pretty seriously contemplating picking up a 40 or an 80 as my new project (still going to keep the 4runner though). I've finally decided that building an 80 is kind of redundant since I already have the 4runner, so I'm planning to head down the 40 road. My vision is to find a classic looking 40, add some light mods but keep it fairly original, and have it be a dependable DD around town and an option for shorter road trips to the coast when the weather is nice.

I've been looking at 40s pretty regularly on Mud, Craigslist, and eBay for a while, trying to get an idea of what's out there and what I want. I'm still not quite in a position to start seriously searching, but hopefully by the fall or maybe early 2014 I can get started. Since I'm sure it will take me quite a while to find the "one", I figured I would go ahead and introduce myself and start spending a little more time on the ONSC area of Mud.

Looking forward to learning as much as I can from you guys, and can't wait to join the cruiser club in the near future. Figured I'd add a few recent pictures of my 4runner for good measure (and an old stockish one for fun), not a cruiser but thought you guys would still appreciate a well cared for Toyota.

Matt

Welcome to mud!

Your 4Runner looks great! I hope you'll join us on a trip later this year as it certainly looks capable for everywhere we go.

Best wishes in your search for a 40. This group has been helpful putting peopel and 40s together in recent months. I hope the streak will continue.

Welcome and nice 4runner! I'm in Hillsborough and own a 40 and an FJ Cruiser. Feel free to contact me and check out the 40 sometime. I'm not an ONSC member yet, but plan to be once my daughter gets a little older and I can attend some events. I have met a few members and they are a great crowd!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the welcome! Finding a relatively local 40 with a known history would certainly be ideal, it's tough to tell what a fresh coat of paint might be hiding with some of the internet 40s for sale.

Snowdogyyz - Your 40 looks awesome, I've actually come across your build thread on the forum before but didn't realize you were so close. I'd love to come by some time in the next few months to check it out, I'd seen very few 40s up close and it might sell my girlfriend on the whole idea even more!

Good afternoon, lunch for me :) Welcome. You will have no problems getting qualified information in this club. I have been involved in my fair share of clubs and this club is by far the most together club I have come across. I am happy they welcome this SC boy.

I think the best way to look at buying a 40 is how much is left to do and how well was what has been done, done. Prices are slowly rising, I think you can count on that to continue. If I were to be looking for a sound 40 that I could at least drive to town and not worry ect. I would expect to pay $5K and up.

Oh yeah, nice looking 4RNR:) I have a 1st Gen

Are u still in chapel hill? I'm over in Jacksonville/swansboro area. .and more than willing to share my 40!

I've got a 40 just up the street in Morrisville. Nothing like the build goals you mention below, but the drivetrain is currently out while I'm doing a 2FE build/conversion. You are more than welcome to come by anytime, but you aren't going to like the flag that flies 24/7 on the front of my house. Hint, hint - I have a BSEE. Might be a good opportunity to see the belly of the beast that is usually inaccessible.

Oh yeah - welcome to ONSC :flipoff2:

Well I've been a member for all of 30 hours and am amazed at how great a group this is, many thanks for the offers to check out your rigs, advice on my search, etc. Hopefully I can see as many of them as possible, it will certainly help me when I start looking (plus, what is better than checking out old land cruisers? haha).

Sarca - I am still living in Chapel Hill but grew up in Kinston so I spend a weekend every month or 6 weeks in that part of the state. I also spent several summers working down in Atlantic Beach and still head down there as much as possible, so I'm pretty familiar with the Swansboro area - I'll have to swing by the next time I'm down there.

Sounds good - pm me and I'll shoot you my number next time!

Hello Matt and welcome. As you will hear from many, let us know when you will be in an area and we're glad to share what we can. There are not a lot of 40's in the greensboro, triad area but we're always happy to find an excuse to gather.
