YEAH FOR A NEW ISSUE!!!!! *god the wife is going to kill me*

So as I was going through and cleaning everything up last night on the frame I detached the last hanger for the muffler. When I did so I heard a slight crunch but didn't see anything move. So I thought nothing of it and continued removing the hardware. Well low and behold as I am wirewheeling the frame I catch and bump into the exhaust pipe and it rotates?!?!?!?!

I made the mistake of seeing what just happened and noticed a huge amount of black carbon at the outlet junction and then realized, yup, it is COMPLETELY gone! I could literally rotate the pipe without the muffler itself moving, the outlet junction was completely rusted out, GREAT!!!:bang:

So looks like there will be a new exhaust in my future, what is everyone using that they like? I want something that is going to have a bit more sound to it but will not drone at highway speeds. I think @klinetime574 and @reevesci and a few others have used MagnaFlow mufflers in the past and I will probably throw a cat on there just for perpetuity but hopefully this isn't going to cost me a whole grip of money. I have seen the Walker stock setup online before and if I remember it was about $300 without shipping. Eventually down the line I will plan to go with a Vortec or SBC swap (yes I know I have conceded) so would be nice to have something that I could keep when that happens. Thinking 2" inlet with a 2.5" or 3" outlet?

For my 60 I got a Thrush Turbo muffler for $30 from Summit racing, and a generic $70 cat converter. 2.5" inlet and outlet, centered on muffler.

I ran just the stock cat converter for a while before I got the new exhaust installed, it really wasn't loud at all. Didn't hear that much difference with a new cat and muffler. So if you want more sound, maybe just a muffler and no cat.

Thanks guys... Yeah I am waiting to see what is sounds like with it mostly broken off like that. Figure it may be a bit louder but probably not much since it is the outlet not the inlet. If nothing else I will disconnect what I need and rip that part off.

Plus I was hoping to go to a little bigger outlet. Do like a 2" inlet to a 2.5" or 3" outlet. Got to find that as it doesn't really seem to exist from what I am seeing.

Funny Greg, I seem to developing the same issues as you. After this long trip I hear my exhaust a bit louder looked under and muffler broke at the seams.
Now it's suspension and muffler to deal with.

I got a whole new stock exhaust from beno; it goes from cat back. Had to fix up and acquire some of the stock mounts and brackets, ditched the cat. Kind of a hassle but it sounds good and isn't loud. Prob cheaper to just go to a muffler shop, in retrospect.

Yeah thinking that this will be something where I got to a muffler shop and see what they can build me on the cheap. Will source what is necessary myself if possible to save costs but was really hoping to give her a bit more breathing room.

The stock EX pipe matched to the stock muffler without a cat breathes more than well enough. You can really feel it above 2300 rpm. It's the stock cat that strangles the flow. If you installed a new larger 2.5" ex system with high flow muffler, but kept the stock cat, I doubt the engine would breathe any better.

@gregnash I'm pretty sure this is the muffler I have... The images look different, but I remember "fully welded" being in the title.

Summit Racing® Fully Welded Mufflers SUM-633222

Looks like they have some cheaper ones too. Like this one... probably a little noisier

Summit Racing® Turbo Mufflers SUM-631125

My muffler isn't even noticeable at idle honestly. If you stand behind it and listen you might be able to tell.

Catalytic converter I used a Catco 2.5" In/Out. Similar to these here (the first two for $69.97, can't recall the length)

Paired up with some headers, and $234 at the local muffler shop they got my exhaust done. With the amount of welds on the exhaust, it better not ever leak lol

..but now I want a glasspack, look how cheap!

I am pretty sure that the stock CAT is done so that will be replaced with something that is a bit more free flowing as well. Will have to see what I can come up with but new exhaust is gonna have to wait a bit. Gotta have the money to do it and right now it is going towards a much needed vacation.

Do you have emissions testing? If not just gut it.

No emissions testing.... *ow ow* ok you have twisted my arm enough! Now the question is if I can get the shop to NOT install a cat.

Probably won't happen unless it's a shop that does race cars often and you pay cash.

Or

You could give them your old cat to install and you buy the "test pipe" from Man-a-fre.

Now the question is if I can get the shop to NOT install a cat.

Ok I got the shackles today. The grease nipples were not screwed in so question is should I put blue loctite on them or no???

no? (whatever), just screw in but dont damage the thread on the first try?

Because they are only replaced when the ball is rusted or does not move anymore (press in with your nail) there is a day you want to replace.
I have needle caps on them (from MS syringe) but when in real mud sometimes a loose them,
so small rubber caps (also used for brake air release), a cloth and bronze brush are also fine to clean but a cap with some fat keeps the rust away.

Ok yeah I wasn't planning on using Red Loctite, was thinking blue just to ensure that they do not randomly back out or anything like that. Probably just put a small drop on each so that it stays in place.

@hj 60 thanks for the recommendation on the rubber covers for the nipples. I will see if I can find something locally and if not then grab from the interwebz.

I've never had a grease zerk fall out. I did break one off from being macho with the 8mm wrench. Blue loctite sounds like a good idea though.

When I snugged mine up last time I basically spun til I got strong resistance at the wrench and then lightly applied pressure for final "torque"

Well sonofabitch........ The new springs are so over arched that I cannot connect stock length shackles.

Now to figure out how to flatten them some. Need about 2".
