SO, I got the glass on my '91 replaced in December at a Safelite in Fla -- they used Toyota glass and seal --

-- a month ago, the seal sprung a leak, so after some drain cleaning and the like, I discovered it was indeed the windshield --

-- I called Safelite, and the local CT dealer did warranty work on it, gunking around the seal --

-- STILL didn't work.

So, I called them and told them, and they said to bring it in, because they had a "Toyota windshield" --

-- I took it in two days ago, and they had a PILKINGTON windshield -- they said, "oh, it's the same thing" --

-- to which I said, "then why doesn't it say TOYOTA" -- duh --

-- so, they said they would order Toyota glass from the dealer.

This AM, I get a call from the service manager at Safelite, telling me the glass they're getting me is Toyota glass, made by Pilkington, and that Pilkington "bought the dies from Toyota" and that it's the same glass -- and that I basically don't know sh*t about his industry --

-- I asked him again then, why doesn't the glass say TOYOTA on it if it's the sasme quality? For me, even in Pilk'ton made it and Toyota branded it, the stuff with the Toyota branding would likely be of the highest quality.

He then said that Pil'ton made ALL the glass for '91 LCs -- so I said, riiiiiigggghtttt -- Toyota Japan called an American windshield company in '91 and bought all their glass from them, re-badging it Toyota -- and the seals, too?

He said finally, "okay, we'll try and repair your windshield, but if it breaks in the process, we'll get you glass at the dealership, which is made by Pilkington" -- I said, "as long as the Toyota logo is on there" ass-monkey --

-- then I said I wanted the OEM seal, too 5612160100 -- $35 -- he then said, "We'll get you what you want from the dealer, but be wary, it won't fit as good as the Pilkington stuff" -- he said I'd have poor-fit gaps and the like --

WTF is going on here?

This is so frustrating it's unbelievable -- imagien what common people (that aren't pains-in-the-asses) get from places like this -- JUNK --

-- so, we'll see what Monday brings -- I can't IMGAINE an installer saying that aftermarket will fit better than OEM -- this is baffling -- what, does Safelite get the Pil'ton windshields for like a nickel or something?

Fightin' --

Go park on their install isuzu pickup and tell them that the Pilkington glass in it didn't hold up too well. >:(

Eric,
I work for a F@rd dealer and I can tell you I have never seen an oem ford peice of glass ordered. there are two levels of auto glass, the cheeesy s@felite s***e they tried to pawn on you and the car lite stuff wich is good quality. Maybe Dan can correct me here on the oem but I would have a hard tiem beleiving Toyota Dealers would stock or even order glass form toyota in japan. As a general rule Pilkington high end glass is pretty good actually, the seal issue is a valid one and I would be adamant on this one as well. If you want to test the glass guy out call up a toyota dealer in the next state over and ask who they use for warranty glass work. chances are they out source that work to a local glass vendor.
If you want to look for oem glass and that will make you happy well then keep on trying. understand however its pretty uncommon for dealers to 1. have anyone who knows anything about glass in general. 2. anyone to install it if they do.

Thanks Dave -- I got OEM glass last time from Safelite, and and an OEM seal --

Toyota OEM doesn't just fit, it matches --

-- dan's minion --

The replacement windshield I got for my FJ40 says "Toyota" in the corner...I don't know why they would have OEM for one and not the other at the dealership. On the other hand my 80 had a Pilkington when I bought it...and I don't have any complaints on the quality. I think Dave is right - the gasket might make a difference...but the glass questionable...

Well like I said I work for f@rd.........
Perhaps toyota is a better made product.
whod a thunk that.

When I had mine replaced at Safelite, they had to order a windshield through Lexus, cause the local toy dealer couldn't get them.

It lasted about 1.1 years before nicks became cracks, and I became pissed.

I got the "cheaper" one after that (first one cost just under $400, second $150) and it's lasted 2.5 years getting just one nick. OEM had a 'brown' tint, non-OEM is clear or maybe a 'blue' tint, but you get used to it after a short while and don't notice the difference.

Basically, it seems like the OEM glass is pretty brittle compared to other glass, so I'm not sure it makes that big of a difference if it's OEM or not. In fact, if it DOES make a difference, I think it's the opposite of what you might first believe.

I found out while at CM2004 that there is one more difference between LCs and LXs and that's the windshield tint color. Apparently the LX tint is brown and the LC tint is blue. Don't know why there's a difference, but I guess there is.

??? One of those odd-makes-no-sense-to-me differences between the LX and LC.

Gee, imagine if you would have read archives before you went there in the first place. :slap: :slap:

Safelite sucks. I've dealt with several different offices and their installers do crappy work. I think if you did it yourself you'd do a better job. What really stinks though is that sometimes it takes awhile for the poor workmanship to show up. Then of course it does so at a highly incovenient time. :(

i agree -- i will watch the "new" "installer" closely --

--- what a PITA --

One thing I've been warned to watch for. In the 80's FSM I believe it specifies that glue must be applied BOTH to the seal/body and seal/windshield unions. The installers don't like this because it's messy and more difficult. The guy replacing mine in the driveway on my dime (no glass coverage in Idaho with USAA) told me they always work fine. A couple gentle nudges by me that I'd like it done that way and he did it my way. Good thing because he was about to be sent on his way.

Important tip: Have this discussion before he touches your truck. It's a bad idea to start it when your old windshield is out and the truck's undriveable.
