SO, I got the glass on my '91 replaced in December at a Safelite in Fla -- they used Toyota glass and seal --
-- a month ago, the seal sprung a leak, so after some drain cleaning and the like, I discovered it was indeed the windshield --
-- I called Safelite, and the local CT dealer did warranty work on it, gunking around the seal --
-- STILL didn't work.
So, I called them and told them, and they said to bring it in, because they had a "Toyota windshield" --
-- I took it in two days ago, and they had a PILKINGTON windshield -- they said, "oh, it's the same thing" --
-- to which I said, "then why doesn't it say TOYOTA" -- duh --
-- so, they said they would order Toyota glass from the dealer.
This AM, I get a call from the service manager at Safelite, telling me the glass they're getting me is Toyota glass, made by Pilkington, and that Pilkington "bought the dies from Toyota" and that it's the same glass -- and that I basically don't know sh*t about his industry --
-- I asked him again then, why doesn't the glass say TOYOTA on it if it's the sasme quality? For me, even in Pilk'ton made it and Toyota branded it, the stuff with the Toyota branding would likely be of the highest quality.
He then said that Pil'ton made ALL the glass for '91 LCs -- so I said, riiiiiigggghtttt -- Toyota Japan called an American windshield company in '91 and bought all their glass from them, re-badging it Toyota -- and the seals, too?
He said finally, "okay, we'll try and repair your windshield, but if it breaks in the process, we'll get you glass at the dealership, which is made by Pilkington" -- I said, "as long as the Toyota logo is on there" ass-monkey --
-- then I said I wanted the OEM seal, too 5612160100 -- $35 -- he then said, "We'll get you what you want from the dealer, but be wary, it won't fit as good as the Pilkington stuff" -- he said I'd have poor-fit gaps and the like --
WTF is going on here?
This is so frustrating it's unbelievable -- imagien what common people (that aren't pains-in-the-asses) get from places like this -- JUNK --
-- so, we'll see what Monday brings -- I can't IMGAINE an installer saying that aftermarket will fit better than OEM -- this is baffling -- what, does Safelite get the Pil'ton windshields for like a nickel or something?
Fightin' --
