We'll probably drive up Saturday morning as well... anyone want to meet at the North Portal?

I think that we are going to aim for Friday night. We're bringing our dog and do not plan on "wheeling". Saturday, we may just go look for a spring or something, and relax.

we knew it was coming. I can still relax and ejoy myself in the pines.:D

Dammit! Camping without campfires? Just not quite the same....

oh well, we have a new camp stove we need to try out anyways.

It may be over by then - there is supposed to be rain starting on Sunday. That would be a couple of weeks earlier than average, but it could happen. Generally the monsoons get up to the Jemez right around the 1st of July. As of today there is another fire there. You can track it here if you have Google Earth:

Fire Data in Google Earth

Edit: We won't be going up as long as there is a fire restriction - that would include for cutting firweood.

I and my family are still definitely going. I need to get out. it's all I want for Father's day every year.:grinpimp:

we are looking at going up past the fish hatchery. I will look up the coordinates. there's is a huge meadow that is great for a big group.

arrrggghhh! 2 new fires and 1 is right where I wanted to go.:bang:

back to the Paliza idea. I see on google and msn maps a huge open area near the top of the trail. I can't find how to get gps coords from those, so I'll have to wait to get home tomorrow and use google earth.

ok, I was looking at this spot on google earth at-
35*45'13.13"N
106*33'1.91"W

it's near the top of Paliza at 8600feet. south of the fires, so no smoke(winds will be from the south and sw). msn maps shows an access road in, though I can't see it through the trees on the satellite imagery. there's another smaller one about 100yards north of it that is possible too.

thoughts?

Looks like the access from the Paliza trail cuts off about one half mile SW of the spot you pegged.

according to the msn maps, it's almost directly north. their road tracing matches the roads visible in the middle of the open area, so it's hopefully close to that. the GPS for the turn off should be about-
35*45'36.67"N
106*33'1.91"W

there's also a spot off Bear Springs here-
Bear Springs

both Paliza and the Bear Springs spots have some roads labeled "OHV" near them that could be fun to explore. the club took the Bear Springs road and cut over to Paliza on a snow run this winter.

Holy crap, how in the world are we going to find these sites if we haven't been there before? (yeah yeah gps, ham radio blah blah blah. I'm mean and won't let Ron go buy a gps until after we buy the crib and other nursery stuff).
Shawn, will you tie flags on the trees where we should turn please?
Kthanks.
;p

oh, and I like the smaller meadow one. Bear Springs. If it matters.....

My dad and I will be coming up Saturday morning. Is someone with Ham going to relay directions to someone in town with ham and then they will post up?

I am working on getting my ham radio up and running in 2 vehicles. and yes, I will put up signs for people to follow. there are a few groups coming up it sounds like, so what ever your planned leave time is, I bet someone will be able to caravan with you who does have ham or gps. you guys start organizing those times (here on this thread is fine).

Becca, was that a little dropped hint?! are congrats in order?
