im replacing my belts and i noticed alot of silicone fan clutch fluid all over the inside of the fan. the fan wiggles in every direction. i know the bearing in my water pump is going bad (im getting on that as soon as i move), but the fan moves more than the shaft into the pump. would refilling the clutch fix this? or is it totally shot?

Sounds shot to me..

Time for another fan clutch. You might be able to rebuild it but good replacements are not expensive.

X2... dead

Since you are replacing your waterpump AND fan clutch, maybe flush the rad and replace the thermostat, and any older hoses. That way your cooling system will be @100%. One less thing to worry about in an older truck.

yeah thats what i thought. anybody have a used clutch? because i dont have $200 to get one, unless someone other than spector sells them cheaper

Make sure you get an OEM clutch if you decide to replace it. Mark did a piece in his tech column in Toyota Trails a few years back about the problems with aftermarket fan clutches in 60/62s.

When my cruiser was new to me it was running hot, and a local mechanic diagnosed the problem as the fan clutch - which he replaced. 18 months later the cheap POS failed, and I replaced it with an OEM clutch. (By then I was a little more clued into the quality of OEM stuff.) The difference between an OEM clutch and an aftermarket clutch is huge...the OEM clutch is bigger, thicker, heavier, more robust in every way.

Go OEM. The first one lasted 15 years, the aftermarket one lasted 18 months.

I think i've got to change my fan clutch cause the cruiser gets hot when the engine is on and when it's parked.
i think i'm not going to buy the OEM cause here in Venezuela some of the OEM stuff are way to expensive, but sure i will go with a japonese brand that my dealer recomended.

The problem with aftermarket fan clutches isn't just that they fail. If I remember the article Mark wrote he speculated that they are designed for a vehicle where the fan is closer to the radiator. When they are back further in a cruiser they don't lock up as well because they don't get enough heat transfer from the rad. He tested several "makes" and regardless of the box the fans all appeared to be the same and had the same problem. Not so with the OEM clutch. Mark did mention that he had an OEM fail as well that they replaced under warranty.

That's an interesting point. thank's for the help though. i think i'm going to ask and compare the prices of the oem and the aftermarket, but i know that the aftermarket is the same as the oem cause i've seen it. i think it's a company (japonesse) that makes the same products as the oem. also i think they're certificated by toyota but i'm not sure.
