I know this has been discussed and I searched but am unable to locate a definitive answer. So here goes...again.

How close should the 8 blade mechanical fan go to the fan shroud? Some say the fan should just end where the shroud begins, some say the fan should extend half way into the shroud.

My current setup is to have the fan half in and half out and I am running warm to hot. When slow wheeling such as on the Rubicon with no airflow at idle I get hot. (>210) (Yes its a 350, 3 row stock radiator)

I just purchased a 4 row radiator and plan to remove the fan spacer and try having the fan just at where the shroud begins... unless someone has a bettet idea.

Thanks,

BigJim

mine was just inside the opening of the shroud, maybe a half inch give or take and worked fine.

I've always heard half in and half out is correct. Distance from the fan to the rad makes a difference. I've heard that you don't want the fan too close (less than 2"). Blade pitch is also a factor, some fans move more air than others.

I'd swap in the 4 row and see how that performs. Be sure to seal any gaps along the outside of the rad so all airflow goes thru the rad/shroud.

check out fans on other cars half in half out and they said the same thing on power block.my v8 is the same and works fine .condition of inside of rad can also make a difference good luck

I just went through this over the past two weekends. I tried it at 1/2 and 1/2 based on all the info I read online and was not happy with the air flow at idle. I then went back and extended the shroud back so the fan is completely inside the shroud and the airflow was significantly increased at idle. This is what worked for me.

Althoug mine is inside the shroud, Jim-Sickles-Downey would disagree.........:hhmm:

sounds like an experiment is in order here 2 ways and they both seem to work .now if i can find my cfm meter..by the way my sons chevy trucks of 85 vintage have em half and half and so does his 69 mustang and my 65 and 69 fj40 factory stock are the same .so i geuss go with what works best for your vehicle .good luck
