Hi Guys,

Looks like it's time to replace the fan clutch on the 91 FJ80. Yesterday she was running at 3/4 on the temp gauge. After driving home with the heat on I found the fan clutch is leaking at the hub. Does anybody have one ready to go with the heavier oil?

Thanks for the help,
Brad

P.S. Just got back from Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan. I have some pictures of the cool trucks they won't send us on the way.

From what Ive been told the black hub fan clutch Im running is in the immediate neighborhood of 30K. At first it would chirp the belts when cold but has got better about it over the few years is been on my 80.

3fe should have the green hub and I'm running 10,000 cst in my green hub yielding plenty of air movement. Also you might want to inspect your 'entire' cooling system.

@murf, that must be some squeal

I run 10K in the black hub fan clutch on the 80, 30K in the blue hub in the LX - I don't recall what Kevin put into the aqua hub fan clutch in my 40

So, living in Flagstaff, overheating has never been an issue. My cooling system has been flushed twice, new thermostat, radiator, water pump, new hoses, etc done as PM in the last 2 years. My first warm weather trip to PHX was today, and the 3FE does not like the heat! Every time I would downshift going uphill, she was going to 3/4 on the temp gauge. Coolant was spitting out the now empty overflow bottle when she was parked.

A chirp under acceleration has developed, and there is no fan clutch "roar". When it starts up. Sounds like it is time for a new fan clutch. I currently have the Aqua-colored clutch, I peesume it is original on my 92. Given the chirp, I am thinking new with heavier oil is the ticket (chirp =bearings failing?).

What is the consensus on oil weight on a 3FE clutch? And, is Aisin the way to go since there are no more OEM 3FE clutches around?

Tools put 12k in my original 3fe fan clutch. It has a lot more shearing area than some of the newer clutches, so it doesn't need really heavy weight fluid.

I have since swapped my original with a new Aisin clutch from Amazon. Same green hub as OEM. It works great, and I've had no issues. I also installed a digital temp gauge, and it has really helped to know exactly where I'm at, as opposed to guessing on the stock gauge. I've also gone through my entire cooling system, and had no issues since.

I put 17k in my aftermarket hub. I never break 200°f a/c on and 115° outside.

I'm going to play with a dual electric fan set up in a month or so. I'm curious on what mpg gains I can get without the fan clutch set up.
I have my fans alread. And a temp sensor switch. I just need to fab up a shroud.
Also need to seal the air gaps between my support and radiator. But I'll do that as I put everything back together.
